Nourishing Nuxe

I've been loyal to my Maybelline Baby Lips in Relieving Menthol for the past couple of years, but if there's one lip balm that's tempted me to stray, it's NUXE Rêve de Miel. (The other two, BY TERRY Baume de Rose and Christian Dior Crème de Rose are simply out of the question price-wise.) Despite losing count of the number of rave reviews I'd read, I managed to resist satiating my curiosity about it ... until I saw it at a French pharmacy while in Paris. I was set to only stock up on Bioderma and get my hands on some über-hyped La Roche-Posay Serozinc, but I suddenly recalled my repressed interest in it, and grabbed one to take home.

Ingredients: Cera Alba/Beeswax, Olus Oil/Vegetable Oil, Lecithin, Behenoxy Dimethicone, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Extract, Mel/Honey, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Dimethicone, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Caprylic/ Capric Triglyceride, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Rosa Moschata Seed Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil, Candelilla Cera/Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Allantoin, Alendula Officinalis Flower Extract, BHT, Citric Acid, Citral, Limonene, Linalool [N0802/C].

NUXE Rêve de Miel Ultra-Nourishing Lip Balm wasn't what I was expecting at all. I'd read that it was 'matte' finish, so I'd prepared myself for that, but what I didn't prepare myself for was pretty much everything else. For one, it's thick but it's not sticky. It's more like a paste consistency. It smells like food, kind of a cross between honey and apricot jam. You need only the most minuscule amount, spread thinly across the lips, otherwise you've put on too much. The jar is 15g and would last an eternity.

Once applied, it feels a bit heavy and slightly mask-like on the lips, at least in the sense that I can detect some kind of balm sitting on top of my lips like a protective coating. It doesn't give that immediate, gratifying sensation of cooling, soothing hydration that my Maybelline Baby Lips in Relieving Menthol does — but maybe I'm just partial to menthol/mintiness in my lip balms. It's closer in texture to something like Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream (but without the greasiness) than a plush, ultra smooth, cushiony lip balm like the Korres Lip Butters. When I press my lips together to try to blend or work in the product, there's a lot of friction. It's not a balm that glides on and feels slippery or glossy in any way.

That's not to say it's a bad lip balm. It's just not what I'm used to. I think it would make an excellent lip primer (especially for slightly drying matte lipsticks) because the finish is non-shiny and it leaves the lips soft and well-prepped. Otherwise, I'd be inclined to use it as an overnight lip treatment, or an effective salve for particularly harsh weather conditions. On a more superficial note, I find the packaging really appealing, especially the weighty glass jar. Though NUXE Rêve de Miel hasn't become my new favourite lip balm, it's well worth checking out for those still holding out.

  2. This is a product that has really intrigued me, I've read so many reviews and I'm not sure that I would really like it, I think it's the matte finish that puts me off. It does sound like it would make a perfect overnight treatment though!

  3. This was a disappointing product for me, always a risk when it's a product that so well loved. It just didn't really do much for me, it didn't absorb, it just sat on top of my lips and and didn't sink in. I wasn't the biggest fan how heavy it felt on either.

  4. I didn't know that Nuxe had a lip balm :o I recently got a night moisturiser from them and it's quite nice.
I personally prefer really try moisturising lip balms. I don't like the one that "pretend" to moisturise...
I might look for him in the future!

Please take care, have a nice day!

  5. Oh I want to try it as a lip primer since I have some matte lipsticks that get very dry/hard to put on :)

  6. It's one of my favourite lip balms at the moment, and just like you mentioned, it's a fantastic primer for any dry lipstick!

  7. I completely agree with everything you said, it really didn't blow me away and didn't live up to the hype but it does an okay job as a lip balm. Nothing miraculous xxx

  8. Sometimes I prefer a lip balm that has more of a lasting thick consistency so this is good to know!

  9. This is my favourite lip balm to use at night. It's quite waxy so I find that it's best as an overnight treatment. I personally think it's worth the hype!

  12. my local pharmacy is having a promo for nuxe products, I'll check this one soon. :-) though I am not sure about the packaging as I don't really like lip balm that comes in a jar T.T
I recently got EOS lip balms and I loooooove them so much! ;)

  14. I've been holding out on this so your post really made me rethink and if I am going to buy it I'll be using it as an overnight treatment. Great review as always :)

  15. I've been wanting this for aaaaaages... maybe one day I'll get to try it out. Strangely enough I've not heard anything about this balm other than it's "AH-MAAAAAZING" so to hear you describe the texture is really interesting. Definitely sounds like an overnight treatment (which is great; I swear by them) and, like you said, if anything it's a great little pretty thing to have sitting around to stare at haha.

  16. I agree with your review of this, I've had it for quite some time now and find it is nice as an overnight treatment but not something I like to have with my during the day as a lip balm. I think having a nice matte lip prep is great for stubborn lipsticks, so it is a winner in that respect too. I also agree about By Terry and Dior balms- would love to get one as a gift but I could never drop that amount on a balm lol.

    1. I don't even want to think about how expensive both are over here ... considering they're like $60 in the US or aroundabouts (at least the By Terry last time I checked). So basically $200 here :p

  17. I absolutely love the packaging. It sounds different than anything I've ever tried, but I'm still interested. I love experimenting with balms.

  18. I didn't love this at first but once I got used to that "mask" like feeling it quickly became my favorite! I love the texture and the amount of moisture it gives!

  19. After this I want to try it, I'd love a good lip primer before my favorite matte lipsticks and the matte finish it haw makes it perfect in a way I guess! ;)

  20. I didn't like the smell- and it cost $32 SGD which I felt was ridiculous to pay for a lip balm. Does it wear a lot better than regular lip balm? In staying on for a significantly longer period of time, I mean. Not keen on the pot either- Korres lip butters are lovely and they smell nice, which warrants the pot imo. I think I'll stay happy with Korres Jasmine as a poor man's By Terry Baume de Rose (Baume de... Jasmine).

    1. Hahaha! Love it :) Though it doesn't really smell anything like Jasmine. It's more like milk candy. I think it does wear longer, but mainly because it's wax-based. It's more waterproof, but only in the sense it's coating your lips. And $32 SGD is outrageous. I bought this for I think 8-10 euros or something? I can't remember. But to be honest it's $20 here and not hideously more expensive than other there.

  21. I think I'm the only one who don't like this lip balm ... :'( I prefer Carmex or the new Labello (or Nivea) lip butter, cheaper and better ! :D

  22. Interesting...I don't know how I feel about 'pasty' as that's how I felt with some of korress lip butters, or at least the pale shades, really don't like that feeling. I just want something straight up moisturizing! Thanks for reviewing!

  23. it does take a while to get used to , especially if you were expecting something different. Personally, I really like it, love the scent/taste too and it's my favourite overnight treatment. :)

  24. My sister bought me the Creme de Rose lip balm for Christmas last year and I've been trying to finish it before I start on my Nuxe lip balm which was a gift from a friend that went to Europe! I generally only use lip balms in a tub at home as lip treatments overnight or as a lip primer since I don't like sticking my fingers in it when I'm on the go so this sounds perfect :) Can't wait to try it!

  25. I use this as an overnight treatment. Not just for the feeling of it, but also because I love having something i can just throw in my bag, and carry around with me throughout the day. I wouldn't do that with nuxe, mainly because of the glass jar. I do agree that it definitely does take some getting used to!

  27. Personally I absolutely love this lip balm I'm not really a fan of sticky balms so thats probably why I love it so much. i feel like it actually penetrates my lips and hydrates instead of just sitting on the surface. My little tub lasted me 6 months so to me it's worth every penny!

  29. I've been seeing reviews for this Nuxe lip balm pop around over the last few months and the other day I had just purchased it! I love the luxurious look of its jar, and I'm hoping it'll be a great overnight lip treatment (currently I use Lanolip's Golden Ointment which I love, but hey, doesn't hurt to try new things right?). In a way I would like to prefer a lip balm that isn't too "slippery" on application as it won't easily smear off the lips. But I won't comment until I get it in my hands first :)
