Next Best Thing

So the Revlon Lip Butters have finally landed in Australia. Small problem: they’re $21.95 each. As hyped-up as they are and as much as I want to build an obscene collection, I won’t be purchasing any at that (ridiculous!) price. Still, it was a thrill to be able to finally see, touch and swatch them in person at my local Priceline. I’m holding out for when they go on sale, hopefully sooner than later.

With the Lip Butters out of my reach for now, I’ve developed a newfound appreciation for these two L’Oréal NutriShine by Colour Riche lipsticks I have in Shiny Grapefruit and Rose Guava. The retail price for these is about the same as the Lip Butters, but I bought them as part of the Silver Collection gift set on sale at Priceline for $15. The NutriShine lipsticks are similar to the Revlon Lip Butters in that they’re a cross between a balm and a lipstick. They’re not as pigmented as a lipstick and more hydrating, while still having more colour and gloss than a regular lip balm. Shiny Grapefruit is a juicy mid-tone pink with gold shimmer, Rose Guava is darker and plummier, like a rosy mauve.

Soft and smooth in texture, these glide onto the lips and feel very moisturising. They don’t settle into fine lines and have a glossy finish without having the thickness and stickiness of a gloss. While sheerer than most lipsticks, the pigmentation for both is good, certainly miles ahead of several Lip Butters I swatched in person (Crème Brulee, Creamsicle, Gum Drop and the light pink shades come to mind). The one thing I don’t love is the glitter in these, most visible if you take the product off your lips. After wiping off the swatches I did for the photos, my arm positively dazzled with silver glitter particles. The shade selection isn’t as trendy and varied as the Revlon Lip Butters, but these NutriShine lipsticks will have to fill the void for now. The formulation is excellent and they’re still a great way to pop some colour on the lips without resorting to the heaviness and seriousness of a lipstick.

  1. Rose Guava looks so pretty! I was going to pick one of these up a few days ago, but I didn't know what color to get since EVERYONE has only been swatching the Lip Butters. Thanks so much for the post!

  2. I will definetely try these out. I love how they are soft as a lip balm, glitterish but not too glitterish as a lipgloss and intense as a lipstick. the best kind of thing to put on my lips.
thanks for the review. i'll definetely try them out.
by the way i don't think that i ever thanked you for your kind comments on my blog.

  4. Wow, the Revlon Lip Butter is expensive in Australia!! Over here in Canada, I can get it on sale for CDN $4.99!! Maybe that's why I kept buying. I have more than 9 now. Would love to try out the Loreal Nutrishine. Unlike others, I don't like lipsticks which are too pigmented. I like the sheerness and naturalness.

  6. Both of them really look lovely on your lips, I think they suit your skintone! These haven't received much coverage on blogs, but they look like they fit right in when it comes to the lipstick-lipbalm hybrid rage. xx

  7. Wow! Yeah, they are soooo not worth that price. I'm not even sure they are worth the $8 bucks they cost here in the US. I love my colour riche balm. I like the feel of it more and wear it more than my lip butters.

  8. Love the L'oreal lipsticks you picked up! And $21.95 for one measly Revlon lip butter? And I thought Canadians were being ripped off (currently in stores for $10.95). In the US they're sold at around $7-$8 and often have an offer like buy one get one 50% off or a few dollars off. I hate how they mark up products SO much for other countries!

  9. The shades look really nice! I don't get why everything is so expensive in Europe and Australia compared to the USA. Some products that are there considered as drugstore products are so expensive in my country that are considered high-end...

  14. Ahhh...I feel the pinch you have down under! They aren't cheap here either! The two shades look quite similar in the photo but they look so gorgeous on your lips! They sure seem hydrating! Enjoy them! :)

i guess the l'oreal lippies are something different from colour riche balms.

  18. Rose Guava looks gorgeous. They look so shiny and have such a pretty glaze on your lips. When Priceline have their next Loreal sale, I might check these out. Glad to know there is an alternative to the lip butters.

  19. I'm hoping the Revlon Lip Butters will come down in price after a while also. $7 in the US and over $20 here?! Crazy! I'm crossing my fingers for a Priceline sale on the entire Revlon range.

I really like your blog by the way. It's not often I stumble across an awesome blog that just happens to be written by an Aussie. They're few and far between.

I've only just started mine but feel free to take a look if you'd like.

  20. i can't believe those butters were 20 bucks! I picked up a couple here for under 5 bucks on sale...they just didn't work for me. The colors were ok, but they made my lips peel almost immediately. I just posted about a cover girl one that I love.

  21. What? They have totally over priced Revlon lip butters!!! Judging from your post, i guess one pro the revlon has over the loreal is that only peach parfait has glitters and the rest don't. I'm not a huge fan of glittery lipstuff because it can look a little ridiculous and messy when taken off. The colour you have for these look so pretty though, I will have to check these out! Thanks for sharing!

  22. I had no idea they cost that much in Priceline... they don't have pricetags for them anywhere! (A reason I've steered clear from sheer embarrassment of having to put it back after finding out the price!) Now I'll just have to stare longingly at them!

  23. I wasn't sure how much more expensive it was at yours but $21.95!?! That is really quite ridiculous! >___<

  24. Love this! They remind me of the YSL Glossy Balms, but for a fraction of the cost. I can't believe they're so expensive where you are. :(
