I'm definitely no skin care expert, but the post-shower, pre-bed routine I've been diligently carrying out for the past couple of weeks appears to have paid off. Before, my skin was inexplicably dry, in that foundation didn't apply as smoothly, but rather emphasised flaky areas (particularly around my nose), even when I slathered on the moisturiser and face oils. Now, my skin looks to have gained back some suppleness and clarity, and become smoother in texture. I accept the number of products here may be overkill, but the combination and order seems to have worked for me. I'm also concentrating on using up old stuff I still have lying around, so really, it's win-win.
When I started this blog, I had minimal interest in skin care, dismissing fancy, expensive creams and seemingly hi-tech formulations as mostly hocus pocus and deceitful marketing. I believed that I could get by just fine with cheap supermarket cleansers and generic, no frills moisturisers like Nivea Soft. I barely knew what exfoliation was except something I did occasionally for the fun of it with a coarse, grainy scrub, and I didn't touch toner (what a waste of time and money!). Oh, how far we've come. I blame a large part of it on the influence of Caroline Hirons and my participation in the general blogging community. At the end of the day, I ain't getting any younger, and I'd like to think any measures I'm taking now will be incalculably beneficial in the long run. Prevention is better than cure, right? I do draw the line at elaborate daily facial massages, despite Lisa Eldridge being living proof of the rewards.
I'm the kind of person that doesn't care as much about what I use to take off makeup and cleanse my face as I do with what I put on after. Lately, I've been really lazy and relying on Swisspers Cucumber Facial Cleansing Wipes to get off face makeup and a soaked Daiso cotton puff with Bioderma to dissolve eye makeup. I then usually follow with a foaming cleanser in the shower. If I haven't pre-cleansed with a makeup towelette and/or Bioderma, I'll use Dove Foaming Make Up Remover or my DHC Deep Cleansing Oil, then do a second cleanse with a foaming cleanser.
The whole nighttime routine starts with Clarins Toning Lotion with Camomile on a Daiso cotton puff. This is a gentle, hydrating toner that restores some moisture into my face after relatively harsh cleansing while getting rid of any remnant product. It rebalances the skin and ensures a neutral, blank canvas ready for serums and creams. I also find the mere act of wiping a cotton pad all over my face is in itself exfoliating, even if the contents of the toner aren't.
I then liberally spritz Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist all over. And by liberally spritz, I mean a good dousing. Part of the reason for my exuberance is that I want to get rid of it ASAP (and I've been successful, in that there seems to only be about 20% left), since it technically expired a while ago. So long as I'm not breaking out because of it, I figured it shouldn't cause me any harm. It has a high alcohol content (it's the second ingredient), which I'm a bit iffy about. There's also lactic acid in there which always makes me think of it more as an exfoliating toner, though the amount probably isn't enough for it to be effective in that capacity. I find the mist to be fairly drying on its own, so the trick is to not wait until it's completely evaporated off the skin before going in with the next product.
Enter Caudalie Vinosource S.O.S. Thirst Quenching Serum. Once again, a case of mainly trying to use up a product I'm not crazy about. I know my indifference borders on sacrilege for a skin care item that I've not read a bad review about, but it never did much for me. If anything, I was paranoid for a long time it had a tendency to break me out. Having said that, I realised that I don't have many dedicated serums. Caroline Hirons rates serums as the #1 skin care product you should spend money on for those aged 20+, which essentially has granted me permission to treat myself to Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II or possibly Sunday Riley Good Genes Treatment (lottery win permitting) once the Caudalie runs out. The S.O.S. Thirst Quenching Serum is very thin, watery and lightweight. Applied straight after the two toners (and when the skin is still slightly damp from the second), it does provide immediate suppleness and sense of increased hydration.
Onto a face oil. I've been reaching for the Sanctuary Spa Therapist's Secret Facial Oil because it's one of the less heavy and greasy options I have. The oil feels relatively light and refined on the skin and absorbs well. I can't really tell apart the ingredients that go into different face oils, but I like the sound of the rose oils and extracts in this. I usually use about 4 drops all over my face, staying clear of the eye area. Any migration of this or any oil around the eyes is guaranteed unwanted irritation.
Finally, a dedicated nighttime moisturiser. This step after the layer of face oil is probably optional and perhaps entirely superfluous, but I do it anyway. The blurb on the box/jar of Grown Alchemist Regenerating Night Cream Neuro-Peptide & Violet Leaf tries valiantly to convince me the product is worth its $85 price tag, but luckily I only paid $12 for this. It's not too oily or thick despite being quite emollient and you need only a small amount for the entire face (though I apply a fairly generous dollop regardless).
Sometimes I'll skip the Clarins and go straight for the Jurlique (usually after I've already exfoliated in the shower), or use Iluka Hydrating Toner Mist instead. I'll also mix it up with the face oil, preferring Antipodes Divine Face Oil or NUXE Huile Prodigieuse. But the order and the essence of the products remains the same. I wake up the following morning to visibly rested, smoother, softer, and more evenly textured skin. The dry patches have for the most part been banished and active breakouts kept to a minimum.

March Favourites
March was barely distinguishable from February, with the only difference being I officially turned a year older. There was no shortage of cheesecake this month, partially sabotaging my attempt at a "lifestyle change" by eating more cleanly and trying to get in some exercise (and by exercise, I mean run on the treadmill 1-2 times a week while feeling close to puking, and random made up floor exercises in the comfort of my own room). In terms of beauty products, there was a bit of a mixed bag this month, but more items than usual. I had not one, but two favourites for foundation, nail polish and moisturiser.
Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in Taupe (004)
I dismissed Taupe the first time I picked up one of these eyeliners (in Bronze) because it seemed so similar to Maybelline Color Tattoo in Tough as Taupe, which I never use. But with Priceline's most recent 40% off cosmetics sale, I was suddenly inspired to give Taupe a go. I've been reaching for it almost exclusively this past month to define my lower lash line instead of my usual bronze eyeliners. What I like most about it is that it's quite hazy and soft when it's applied, and it wears in much the same way. The lasting power is impressive, but even when it's faded by the end of the day, it doesn't look patchy like some metallic eyeliners can. The overall look is more understated and natural because the colour is matte, very neutral and not as harsh as a black.
Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation in Soft Beige (200) + CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3 in 1 Foundation in Buff Beige (825)
These two mixed together (usually half and half) have been working really well for me. At first, I combined them out of necessity because the Rimmel is too dark and the CoverGirl too light. Sometimes in the morning rush and with less than ideal pump control, I get the proportions out of whack and my face doesn't match my neck, but the freedom to customise your own shade remains one of the biggest perks of having too many foundations. The creamy, thick consistency and occasional over-dewiness of the Rimmel is tamed by the CoverGirl, which has much superior coverage but a drier, more satin finish and runnier, lighter texture. Worked in with my Real Techniques Buffing Brush, this drugstore foundation duo ticks most of the boxes: good coverage, radiance-boosting, sets properly and doesn't overly transfer, excellent lasting power, oil control ... and shade match (when I get it right).
LUSH Snow Fairy Limited Edition Shower Gel
I know this is a popular product from LUSH, especially around Christmas, but despite hearing constant raves, I hadn't tried it until recently. At first, I wasn't blown away (it just smelled of banana lollies to me), but after squirting generous amounts on a shower puff and lathering it all over a couple more times, I saw the light. Yes, it's extremely sugary, but somehow not in an overwhelming, sickly way. I think it might be tamed by the musk in there, but whatever it is, the unbridled burst of edible sweetness is an absolute pleasure. It honestly feels like I'm bathing in lollies. In the past month alone, I've used up about two thirds of my tiny 100g bottle and I'm now majorly regretting not buying a larger one when I had the chance.
China Glaze Nail Lacquer in It's a Trap-eze!
I wore this over Nails Inc. Porchester Square for a whole week, which is almost unheard of when you're as fickle about nail polish as me and frequently change nail polish daily. It's a Trap-eze! is a glitter masterpiece. The overall effect is more speckled egg than bling overload, so it's perfect for any upcoming Easter-themed manicures. Still annoyed BeautyJoint shipped me a half-used bottle though.
Australis Nail Colour in K-Pop
The nail polish colour du jour seems to be Essie Splash of Grenadine (popularised by Estée), which reminded me of this gem from local brand Australis. As soon as I saw K-Pop on the stand, I knew I had to have it. It's such a unique, eye-catching colour (also very fitting with the Pantone Colour of the Year "Radiant Orchid") and the formula is close to impeccable. Here's a shot of the colour on my nails. I like that it has this injection of neon which makes it a bit fresher and more youthful than similar colours that are darker and more dusty.
Trilogy Rosapene Night Cream
I've tried a few products from Trilogy and I can't say my skin has loved everything, but this night cream is a definite winner. I have a mini 25ml jar from the Rosapene Day and Night Collection which I bought during Priceline's 40% off skin care sale around Christmas. This is essentially the evening version of their Vital Moisturising Cream, in that it's slightly thicker and more hydrating. I think the texture is an improvement (closer to Antipodes Vanilla Pod Hydrating Day Cream), it absorbs well, instantly comforts and adds moisture to the skin and smells pleasant and soothing. Dare I say I prefer it to the funky-smelling Antipodes Avocado Pear Nourishing Night Cream (of which I have a small 15ml tube from the Anti-Ageing Minis set)?
Jurlique Arnica Cream
I was fortunate to receive this as a birthday gift and immediately incorporated it into my skin care routine as my daytime moisturiser. The smell reminds me of slightly off, sweet yoghurt and it has a thick texture that requires a tad more effort to spread onto the face, but this stuff sinks deep into the skin and provides amazing hydration and softness. I used to struggle with dry patches, especially around my nose, which would be apparent when I applied my foundation, but since using the Arnica Cream, I don't have those issues anymore. It serves as a perfect base for my foundation because it provides a smooth, richly moisturised platform, but it's not greasy or slippy on the skin. It's almost matte in texture when absorbed. It also doesn't begin to seep through your foundation, emerging as an oily mess a couple of hours later. Yes, there's a bit of shine, but it's positively restrained compared with other products, plus blotting with a tissue ensures the skin is sufficiently mattified for the remainder of the day.

What's in My Makeup Bag
Rather than doing an updated What's in My Bag post, I thought I'd feature what's in my makeup bag instead. There's still some overlap in terms of the products, but the main difference is that I have a makeup bag now to house all my various tidbits in one place rather than needing to rummage through the debris at the bottom of my handbag. Every now and then, I'll forget to zip up the makeup bag, and invariably everything will fall out and my bag contents will become a mess again. Some things never change.
I'm using this free makeup bag that came with a Bourjois gift with purchase from Priceline in November last year. It's a flat, zip up bag with a white-lined interior that holds a lot more than expected. I like that it's purely functional and hardy (a must in the rough terrain of my handbag) — there aren't any embellishments (apart from the gold exterior) or superfluous details. The zip opening runs along the whole width of the bag and it's not made of plastic/stiff material, so it's easy to rummage through and stuff things inside. While it's roomy enough to hold both the mini Klorane dry shampoo and Avene Thermal Spring Water (just), I usually leave those two outside the makeup bag so that it's not too bulky and bursting at the seams.
As usual, I have way too many lip products. I normally will have at least two Korres Lip Butters — Jasmine for a bit of balmy nourishment, Mango for something with a bit more colour and a potential cheek tint. Maybelline Baby Lips in Relieving Menthol is an absolute must as it's the only thing that works to alleviate dry lips craving a bit of soothing, minty hydration. I've gone through so many tubes, I probably could've bought five pots of By Terry Baume De Rose with the same amount of money. The now discontinued Revlon Beyond Natural Protective Liptint in Pink Rose is deeply underrated. It's kind of in the same family as a Clinique Chubby Stick or tinted lip balm, but with greater pigmentation and more comfortable and moisturising on the lips. I like to have a couple of other lip options that I'll move in and out in my bag depending on my mood or current interests, especially if I'm planning to go out at night after work. Right now, there's Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Crush (I hate that the lettering on the outside rubs off so easily) and Revlon Matte lipstick in Strawberry Suede, because I'm all about wine and orangey-reds at the moment.
Spritzes, mists, sprays. There's one for every occasion here. I have the Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist, though I'm really more in love with the smell than what the actual product does. I'm a bit wary of anything where alcohol is the second ingredient, but a careful inspection of the rest of the ingredients list reveals lactic acid and marshmallow root, rose, grapefruit and aloe leaf extracts that seem potentially useful (but really, what would I know). Spraying this also tends to feel more like I'm being attacked with a hose than subjecting my face to a gentle, fine mist. That's where the Avene Thermal Spray comes in — I'm addicted to this stuff. It's a godsend for when I've sat in front of a computer in a dehydrating, air-conditioned office for 8 hours and my face feels like it's about to melt off. I spray this on any skin irritations that might arise, when my face feels weirdly hot, when I need a refreshing, cooling pep up, when my eyes feel tired, when my makeup feels gross nearing the end of the day. I try to convert other people onto it as well. I'm that person pushing them to try it because trust me, it's sooooo nice. It disperses such a light, perfectly distributed mist — kind of like when you're on a sight-seeing tourist boat a few metres from the base of a famous waterfall (Maid of the Mist pleasure-seekers, you'll know what I mean). A small bottle of the Klorane extra-gentle dry shampoo with oat milk is at hand for any emergency touchups to my perpetually greasy roots.
A few more essentials: mirror, blotting paper, a small tub of Nivea Soft to smooth over any dry patches, Listerine PocketPaks (very thin, super minty, small sheets that you put at the roof of your mouth to freshen your breath). There's my favourite hand cream at the moment (only because I've run out of Jurlique rose one): Crabtree & Evelyn Pomegranate, Argan & Grapeseed Hand Therapy. This was a freebie with Women's Weekly a few months ago and it's lived in my makeup bag ever since. The smell just makes me happy. There's my beloved Kai perfume oil which I dab onto my wrists for an instant pick-me-up or whenever I feel like smelling it/smelling of it. I've decided that I really should get my hands on the EDT as it's the only perfume that's excited me for a very long time. Lastly, I have the Maybelline Fit Me concealer in Sand. Said to be similar to the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, this is the only makeup item in my bag excluding lip products. I use this to touch up my skin after a long day if I'm going out at night. I usually dab a bit on my hand, then use my fingers to apply this around the sides of my nose, corners of my mouth and any blemishes that I might have. It sinks into the skin decently when it's first applied, but I find that it does wear off and start to cake slightly as time goes on. I'm not head over heels for it, but it'll do for now.

April Favourites
I've never done a monthly favourites post before, as I tend to stick with the same products regardless of the month and I usually blog about any recent purchases or discoveries separately. I always enjoy reading others' monthly favourites though, so I thought to do one of my own. I like that compiling a "favourites" post each month is almost like the beauty equivalent of a diary. Listing what were the most favoured and reached for items of the past month (even if they've been blogged about before or are regular favourites) is a really neat way of recording how people actually use the products they own.
L'Occitane Daily Face Cleanser with A.O.C. Olive Oil
For the longest time I hated this cleanser because it didn’t foam properly no matter how much I used. Recently I decided to give it another go, accepting that it doesn’t lather, and began to appreciate its virtues. I use a small amount in the morning and it’s very gentle and non-drying. It leaves the skin feeling moisturised and clean, without the harshness of cheaper foaming cleansers. I couldn't find it on the Australian L'Occitane website, which leads me to think sadly it's been discontinued.
Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist
I use this to bring some life and dewiness back to the skin if I feel I’ve gone a tad overboard with the face products (as can happen when you’ve slapped on foundation, blush, bronzer and highlight). I also spray it on a bare face for a refreshing misting. Like most of Jurlique’s products, the scent is divine. The trick is to hold the bottle (literally) an arm’s length away from the face – any closer and it’ll be more like a hosing down than a fine layer of mist.
Batiste Tropical Dry Shampoo
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how well this works, as I’ve been a loyal user of Klorane oat milk dry shampoo for years. I bought this on sale just to try it out and I find myself reaching for it more than my Klorane. Though I prefer the scent of the Klorane, the Batiste performs just as well, if not better. I spray this on my roots in the morning in between washes and it keeps oiliness at bay for the whole day.
Revlon Lip Butter in Strawberry Shortcake
Not that I needed any more Lip Butters after my ridiculous haul, but I did go back and buy this last one. It felt remiss of me to not at least buy one pink shade. Yes, it still looks slightly purple on my lips, but it’s sufficiently darker and rosier than the light pinks in the range so it’s not completely unflattering for my skin tone. As a wearable, everyday pink, it’s been a fixture in my handbag since I bought it.
Real Techniques Buffing Brush
Not really a monthly favourite, as this is probably my favourite brush, ever. But I did use it on a daily basis this month with my Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum foundation (which I was this close to also including in my favourites, except for the niggling fact it’s too dark and yellow-leaning for me). This brush is pretty much the only one I use to apply liquid foundation. It’s quick, easy, super soft and gives a streak-free, fully blended, natural-looking finish.
Essence Eye Soufflé in Pas des Copper
I apply this with my finger in the mornings as both a primer/base and a wash of colour over the lid, before adding a touch of darker bronze eyeshadow closer to the lashline for slightly more definition and depth. I love the texture – it’s dense enough so that a thin layer glides on without looking patchy, and it’s not overly creamy so it doesn’t smudge or move around easily. It also blends really well with powder eyeshadow. This is a versatile, very wearable shimmery taupey/medium bronze shade that is virtually failproof. I hope Essence comes out with more neutral cream eyeshadows like Pas des Copper because this is undoubtedly one of the best budget beauty buys I’ve made.
I couldn't find it on the Australian L'Occitane website, which leads me to think sadly it's been discontinued.

I also spray it on a bare face for a refreshing misting. Like most of Jurlique’s products, the scent is divine.

Beauty Favourites
A few products that I really love, in no particular order.
1. Klorane dry shampoo with oat milk I tend to wash my hair every second day at night. This product is a lifesaver for those times when I cannot gather the energy nor inclination to wash my hair, and when sleeping as soon as possible is a higher priority than clean, shiny hair the following morning. I shake the bottle and spray some of this stuff on my roots in the morning, wait a couple of minutes and brush through. It makes my limp, oily and dirty hair look freshly washed and effectively soaks up my greasy scalp for the whole day. An incredible time and effort saver, this dry shampoo can also be used on clean locks to add volume and texture, especially in combination with backcombing.
2. Maybelline Baby Lips in Relieving Menthol My go-to lip balm, I take this everywhere I go. Ever since this was released in Australia, I've gone through several tubes and need to stock up again. It glides on smoothly and distributes the right amount of balm to the lips, instantly providing minty relief. I wear this lip balm overnight and I do find that in the morning my lips feel soft and moisturised. It can be applied before lipstick as a base to prep the lips, or over lipstick for extra moisture and to add a subtle sheen.
3. Korres Lip Butter in Pomegranate This creamy, coral-tinted lip balm softens the lips while adding a pop of colour and comes in an elegantly designed pot. It is fairly pigmented so I sometimes use this on my cheeks as a cream blush for a healthy, rosy flush. It is a little pricey (retailing in Australia for $18.95) compared with most lip balms, but for the high quality and beautiful packaging, it's well worth it. I'd love to collect these in the other shades available, particularly Jasmine, Quince and Wild Rose.
4. Jurlique Rose Hand Cream Smells heavenly like Turkish Delight and a small amount goes a long way. Non-greasy and fast absorbing. My favourite hand cream, hands down. I'm also a fan of Jurlique's Rosewater Balancing Mist which I liberally spray to my face when I feel like a refreshing, hydrating spritz.
5. Bourjois Liner Feutre in Noir Part of my daily makeup routine, this eyeliner is long lasting and inky, with the felt tip enabling easy and precise application for creating a winged eye.
6. Shiseido Eyelash Curler A step that I rarely neglect before applying masara is curling my lashes. This curler fits well with the shape of my eye and gets very close to the base of the lashes, forming a noticeable upwards curl. Mascara then becomes easier to apply and has a greater effect.
7. Swisspers Cucumber Facial Cleansing Wipes Convenient, generously sized and damp with enough product to remove a face full of makeup. Leaves the skin feeling cleansed and toned. These facial wipes also have a refreshing and clean scent that isn't overpowering or unpleasantly synthetic smelling.
8. Revlon ColorBurst Lipstick in Soft Nude Finding that elusive perfect nude lipstick can be a lengthy, disappointing and costly process. Thankfully my search is over. This balanced nude is warmed by tones of pink and peach, resulting in a flattering, understated and very wearable colour. The ColorBurst lipsticks easily rival higher end brands, with beautiful shades, a creamy and moisturising formulation that applies well to the lips, and sophisticated quilted packaging. What's not to love.
