Lipstick Limit, Part 2

I acknowledge the rational part of my brain stopped functioning long ago on matters relating to makeup, but how I ended up buying 4 of the new Maybelline ColorSensational Vivids lipsticks escapes me. When I first saw swatches on Tram's blog, I was comforted by the fact no particular shade was calling out to me to immediately rush out to buy. I felt like I already had a lot of the colours in my existing lipstick collection. I convinced myself that I didn't need any of them. That I'd exercise restraint. But then gradually, they began popping up on the blogs I frequent. They looked so pigmented and bright. YouTubers were talking about them. I swatched them at Priceline to see what the fuss was about. They started looking awfully tempting.

l-r: Pink Pop, Fuchsia Flash, Hot Plum, Shocking Coral

l-r (top row, then bottom row): Pink Pop, Fuchsia Flash, Shocking Coral, Hot Plum

l-r: Maybelline Pink Pop, Australis Lick the Icing

I thought Pink Pop would be very similar to Australis Lick the Icing, but it's considerably warmer and darker, which makes it a lot more wearable. It's still a theoretically unflattering shade, but one that I was hopelessly drawn to. I probably wouldn't apply multiple layers straight from the tube as it can look jarring against my yellow-toned complexion, but I like this sheered out for a cool, pale but bright purplish-pink. This one has a silver pearl to it that I didn't even notice until I took off the lipstick and saw a load of shimmer left on my lips.

l-r: Maybelline Fuchsia Flash, Revlon Lollipop, Innoxa Pink Peony, MAC Chatterbox, MAC Viva Glam Nicki

Fuchsia Flash was the one shade that I felt I didn't have any dupes of in my collection. Surprisingly, Innoxa Pink Peony is quite close, though more pink and a touch darker. It's also more matte in texture. I keep forgetting I have this lipstick given how opaque and intensely pigmented it is — I really should show it more love. Revlon Lip Butter in Lollipop is a lot darker, nowhere near as bright and more purple with silver shimmer. Both MAC Chatterbox and Viva Glam Nicki are far more pink.

l-r: Maybelline Shocking Coral, Sportsgirl Fruit Tingle, Sportsgirl Rosie Posie, Revlon Melonade,
Maybelline Mango Diamonds, Maybelline Coral Crush

Shocking Coral looked so pretty when swatched, though I was hesitant to buy it because of how many orangey-pinky-coral lipsticks I have already. It's closest to Sportsgirl Rosie Posie, though Rosie Posie is matte in texture and slightly more muted. Still, pretty damn similar. Sportsgirl Fruit Tingle, Revlon Melonade and Maybelline Mango Diamonds are all more orange, rather than pinky-red like Shocking Coral. Maybelline Coral Crush is darker and more orange-red, not as pink.

l-r: Maybelline Hot Plum, Revlon Smitten, Revlon Raspberry Pie, Australis Limited Edition 1
Lime Crime Airborne Unicorn

I was tossing up between Hot Plum and Vivid Rose, but since I'm on a purple/deep berry lipstick kick at the moment, I had to go with Hot Plum. It's very similar to Fuchsia Flash — they're basically the same colour but Hot Plum is a bit darker and a smidgen more purple. It's closest to Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Smitten, a shade I recently purchased during said "purple lipstick kick". Revlon Lip Butter in Raspberry Pie is darker, more of a berry red. Australis Limited Edition 1 is a dark grape. Lime Crime Airborne Unicorn is a cool-toned violet and clearly nothing like the previous shades, though it's so nifty to layer on top of any pink lipstick to make it instantly more purple. Hot Plum stains like crazy, which could be a good or bad thing, depending on what you're after.

l-r (top row, then bottom row): Pink Pop, Fuchsia Flash, Shocking Coral, Hot Plum

The only shade that I think is a standout from this range is Fuchsia Flash. The rest I probably could've done without, but being devoid of self-discipline, they're now the newest additions to my already out of control lipstick collection. Still, being relatively affordable (especially if you manage to get them on sale) "drugstore" lipsticks, they are impressive. I love how truly bright and saturated in colour they are. I've always favoured Revlon lipsticks, but Maybelline have really stepped up their game with this launch.

  9. Shocking Coral looks amazing on you Lena! I don't share your love -obsession- for lipsticks but still, this post made me want to at least swatch some : ) If you did videos I'd request for a makeup collection one, though if you have some time and would like to take pictures and share them here, it would be amazing! Have a great week sweetie ^^ xx

  19. Great swatches as usual! I'm glad that I practiced restraint and only picked up Vibrant Mandarin. But your comparison now makes me want Mango Diamons and Coral Crush, hahaha. I don't think there's a cure for this sort of madness!

  20. LOL! They're on my list too (specifically vivid rose, shocking coral (thank's a lot for making the thirst for that shade of lippy even more intense), vibrant mandarin, and electric orange. ;;_;; The thirst for these lipsticks is MAJOR. Amazing swatches and pigment. You are officially enabling me.

  21. Oh no, now you've made me want Shocking Coral! It's *such* a pretty colour on you too.

  22. No, no, no, no! You needed them all. Yes you did! I LOVE the Maybelline Vivids! I just couldn't believe that a make up line brought out such bright colors! I only have 2 but that's because these are quite dupeable as you've shown, and I had pieces in my collection to match. BUT I would buy them all in heart beat if I could! My restraint is cracking, haha!

  23. Lovely! I have Vibrant Mandarin but I'm so tempted to pick up some more, namely Shocking Coral, Vivid Rose and Hot Plum!

  24. Oh no, I managed not to buy this range while I was in Jakarta.. They cost around 4-5USD which is cheap in comparison to Germany which they cost around 9-10€... Now I started to question my decision not to buy these in Jakarta... T.T
Shocking coral is the prettiest in my opinion since I am not really a fan of cool toned pinks.

  25. I waaaant Fuchsia Flash, Shocking Coral and Hot Plum! they look gorgeous on you!

  26. I've been holding off on buying these as well... darn you for tempting my recently semi-decently controlled self!! Every time I see these on someone's blog I can't help but salivating over how creamy and pigmented they look. I just have to keep telling myself that I probably won't wear the bright colors very often and that I don't need them... I don't need them... BUT I WANT THEM!! T__T

  28. If you like the original line of vivids make sure to check out the limited edition colors! Also, we don't have a shade called shocking coral in the states! I wonder if it's a different color or Mandarin Orange renamed? I love Hot Plum :)

  29. Jeez now you are tempting me! I haven't seen them around here. Otherwise considering my love for brights this was a definite in my collection.

  39. Brilliant swatches, as always! I couldn't resist when I saw these on sale for less than $8 at Chemist Warehouse, so am the proud owner of 5 shades :) Think I might wear Pink Pop tomorrow, thanks for reminding me of it :)

  40. Each colour looks wonderfully vibrant! Are they drying at all? I know that the brighter the colour I wear, the easier it is to pick out the lines on my lips!

    ReplyDelete

    1. It's not too bad, I don't find them particularly drying but they're not exactly moisturising either. They're comfortable enough on my lips, though because the darker shades stain that can be a little drying if you're trying to take it off with a tissue or makeup remover.

  43. I totally know what you mean, I was the same with the Rimmel apocalips and I have thus far managed to resist. I can see why you had to get these. The shocking coral is definitely my favourite and the one I think I would wear most. These are perfect for bright summer lips!

  46. I'm waiting for the Color Whisper line to come to Australian stores! I've swatched a couple of these and apart from being difficult to remove, I'm not interested enough to purchase. I barely do lip colour as it is, let alone brights. How do you think you'll wear these- full on straight from the bullet or patted in and blended out? :P

    1. I wonder when the Colour Whispers will hit our shores! Must not buy more lipstick though, like ever. Depends on the colour - Pink Pop definitely sheered out with a finger, the rest probably straight from the tube. Go hard or go home ;)

  47. These are SO pretty! I like Fushcia Flash and Shocking Coral in particular. I'm actually surprised at why I never considered the Maybelline lipsticks. Well then...I'll just "casually" rush to the stores to buy them *ahem* :$

  50. this doesnt really have anything to do with this post, but i just discovered your blog, and im in love! its so amazing >< by the way, how did you customize your 'popular posts' widget to be that way? thanks x

    1. Thank you! Sweet of you to say :) The "Popular Posts" isn't the normal widget of the same name that Blogger allows you to add, it's actually a text box widget that I then customised with HTML. I resized all the photos in Photoshop and then uploaded them to Flickr, then linked them to the posts that Blogger says are my 10 most popular from my stats :p

    2. woah....sounds so complicated O.o is there perhaps a tutorial for this? it's fine if there isn't, but thanks for the info :D
