5 Products I'm on the Fence About

I thought I would love each of these products, but for whatever reason, I haven't been feeling them. While none of the products are completely abysmal or things I actively despise, my opinion ranges from still undecided (with the potential to be swayed in the positive direction) to mild dislike and the certainty that I won't be repurchasing. It's not so much these products weren't "worth the hype", but rather I feel they're not suitable for me, or I had inaccurate expectations of how they'd perform. I don't necessarily regret purchasing them, but they simply didn't turn out to be the fabulous, must-have additions I envisaged.

l-r: Illamasqua Naked Rose, Sleek Rose Gold

Illamasqua Powder Blusher in Naked Rose
Since my full review in April this year, I haven't worn this blush once. Let that be indication of how inclined I am to reach for it. I just don't think the colour works on me, an issue compounded by the fact I find it nearly impossible to get the application right. It's so pigmented that I have to be super careful with the amount and placement, otherwise it looks ruddy and overdone. Basically, too much work for something that mainly makes my cheeks look red and patchy. It's such a shame that I don't get along with Naked Rose, because it looked so promising the first time I swatched it in person. I was so excited when I bought it and planned on getting a tonne of use out of it. For me, NARS Douceur is the closest to what I thought Naked Rose would be.

Sleek Blush in Rose Gold
Frequency of use even worse than Naked Rose. Since I bought this early last year, I don't recall ever using it. Maybe once or twice playing with my makeup at home, but to the best of my knowledge, never outside the house. Once again, it's a case of the colour simply not working for me, combined with unreal pigmentation making application a daunting task indeed. Rose Gold was one of those products that I absolutely needed and coveted with a burning, sleepless intensity back in the day. As soon as it arrived at my doorstep and I tried it on, I quickly realised we simply weren't meant to be. This is just way too red on me. The shimmer is also on a whole 'nother level, making it difficult to pull off unless you want to sport glistening, reflective cheeks packed with gold shimmer. The shimmer is what makes it special, but not suitable for the daytime, i.e. the majority of occasions that I wear makeup.

Nivea Lip Butter in Vanilla & Macadamia
It's true, these do smell scrumptious, this flavour particularly. But when I think of "lip butter", I think of the Korres ones, or even the Revlon ones, though they're closer to moisturising lipsticks. I expect a plush, cushiony, thick, comfortable and hydrating texture. These aren't like that at all, which honestly surprised me the first time I used them because I'd read so many glowing reviews about how amazing they were. They're more like Vaseline. White Vaseline. The product sits on top of the lip (rather than sinking in) and feels like a waxy coating. It also has a white cast which can look unsightly if you use too much. I will not be repurchasing.

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo
Another product I purchased because I kept seeing this touted as some skin care wonder product and of course, I needed to get my greedy little hands on it. I honestly don't know what I was expecting when I bought this. This is recommended for "mild to moderate acne-prone skin", which doesn't really describe me. I get some pimples now and then, particularly after consuming whole packets of Kettle Chilli chips, but I wouldn't say I've ever had any acne issues. Regardless, I thought it might be a good treatment to keep spots at bay and refine my skin (minimise pores, even out texture). I first experimented using this as an all-over serum under my regular moisturiser before foundation. I didn't notice anything particularly different when I did this, so eventually I just couldn't be bothered. Then I started to use this more as a spot treatment over any breakouts I had. That was a bit more effective, as the next day the area had generally diminished and become less inflamed, but it hardly cured all, and it certainly didn't make everything disappear completely, even over the course of weeks. I think this is a nice, soothing, non-irritating lotion (though personally not moisturising enough to be used on its own), but I just haven't found any kind of noticeable success with it. I have no idea how to use it in a consistent enough manner that I would see results.

Caudalie Beauty Elixir
I do like this and it's undoubtedly in the "nice to have" camp, but at the same time, I'm a bit iffy about it. If we look past the absolutely gorgeous packaging and the hype it's received, what is it anyway? As far as the ingredients list reveals, it looks to be water, alcohol and a bunch of essential oils. Alcohol is the second ingredient. Perfume is the fourth! I can never spray this directly onto my face as invariably, a tiny amount will get into my eyes and sting like crazy. I have to adopt the Lisa Eldridge trick and spray it on my hands first, rub them together, then press my hands all over my face. The instructions on the bottle suggest to apply the Beauty Elixir before your moisturiser. Maybe I'm just a skin care ignoramus, but when I've remembered to do this, I couldn't see how it made any difference whatsoever. If anything, it made my skin feel a bit drier and tighter before I slapped on my moisturiser (unless that's a good thing?). I think it does fare a bit better as something to use over makeup to refresh it and inject a bit of glow back into the face, and also as an instant mood/sensory booster due to the invigorating herbal, menthol scent.

  1. I also totally don't understand the purpose of the Caudalie Beauty Elixir. Just a glorified toner??

    1. but it is SO. NICE.

I didn't even like the smell when I bought it but this has been in my bag every day since I purchased it. So soothing when it gets to midday and you feel like dying.

    2. The alcohol helps with the evaporation so it doesn't feel heavy or like a film even though it has a lot of hydrating oils. It IS just a toner, but since it's skincare it's something that's not going to work on everyone. I personally really love it.

    3. I am totally on the beauty elixir bandwagon as well. It is a toner, but personally I feel like it's worth the extra bucks because it is neatly packaged for easy toting around when you need an afternoon pick me up.

  3. I feel the exact same way about the Caudalie Beauty Elixir - had to have it, used it a bit when I got it but it's definitely not a wonder product... I tend to use it as a make up picker upper too...
It's also very interesting to read about the Effaclar Duo as I've been thinking about picking it up and the Sleek Rose Gold blush, so thank you for your thoughts!

    1. The Caudalie is definitely a super hyped product - I wanted to love it more than I do but I just don't find it very comfortable on the skin. I still like it though because of the packaging, scent and the way that it can inject a bit of life back into your face or makeup.

  4. I've felt the same way about the Caudalie elixer and is the exact reason why I never purchased it; sure it seemed like a nice thing to have but was it really worth the HUGE price tag? I thought not. And I'm also super bummed about the honest reviews that the Nivea lip butters have been receiving; the minute they got hyped I thought "I MUST OWN THEM ALL" but then reviews such as yours started to leak out saying that they're waxy/thinner and leave that white cast to the lips because they just sit on top of them... ew!! I don't care how good something smells, if it makes me look like I have rabies then no thanks haha!

  5. I bought the Effaclar Duo a couple of months ago and used it sporadically, and every time I would notice small bumps in random areas of my face. Another blogger who loves it suggested that maybe my skin was purging and to make sure I used it consistently. So, I've started doing that, but honestly I just don't get spots often enough to know if this is making a difference or not.
I do, however, love the Caudalie Beauty Elixir. It's described on the American Sephora site as a toner/serum and that's how I use it, spraying it onto my face (with closed eyes!) a few times a day to freshen up my skin. It's not a miracle worker, but I do see a difference when using this regularly.

  6. Caudalie Beauty Elixir .. couldn't agree more.
I am actually writing a post about that Friday.
Literally, we have the same thoughts.
I only use it on pimples and it does the job.
    I don't use it everyday.
I hardly EVER use it. I only use it to dry pimples out and it does the job quick.
But when I do that, I also add a lot of oil, serum and moisturizer to the area so it doesn't give me a dry patch.
So many people love using it but it doesn't have the best ingredients for our skin.
I only use it to wake me up or when I feel woozy.

    Great post!!!

  7. I have to agree with you on the Caudalie Beauty Elixer. I'm glad I only purchases the small bottle because while the scent is nice and refreshing, I didn't really notice a difference in my skin either. Sometimes it's hard to separate the brand and pcakaging from the actual product, but I'm glad you did this post and spoke the truth!

  8. Hmm a few products I haven't tried here but have wanted to. I don't ever plan to pick up those Nivea lip butters. They seemed like glorified vaseline to me and I would rather use something else. Shame that Naked Rose didn't work on you, it looks like one of those wonderful boring colors that I love haha. I have lusted after it but I think I'd rather pick up Douceur. Shame that you don't see much improvement with Efflaclar Duo. It is my absolute holy grail. I thought I was imagining it but I briefly stopped using it for a couple weeks once and my pores on my nose and inner cheeks got so congested and clogged up. I normally just apply a thin layer in affected areas. I know some apply a thin layer ALL over their face but I find that wasteful and I don't think it helps with anything else besides declogging. I think some people even use it as a primer, again something I don't notice a difference with when used that way probably because my skin is oily.

  9. I've tried Effaclar Duo and Caudalie's Beauty Elixir. I have to say I do agree with you about both. Effaclar Duo just didn't do anything for my skin, but for my brother who suffers from breakouts quite a bit, it worked a treat. I prefer Effaclar A.I. which is a more targeted breakout correcter. I have to say as much as I do agree with you about the Beauty Eliixr and keep re-purchasing it because I'm so addicted to the scent. I just find it do refreshing and I like to use it as a toner of sorts for days when me skin is looking a little lacklustre or if I have a few spots.

I have a blush similar to the Sleek one you mentioned it's a Dainty Doll one and I found the same problems with it as you had with the Sleek one. I just think it's not the right colour for me!

  10. I think Naked Rose looks incredibly beautiful on you - at least the way you wore it in your review post. I enjoy a more noticeable blush though, so I'm really enthralled by the pigmentation and soft texture of the Illamasqua Powder Blushers. I recently purchased the shade Tremble and it's a beautiful bright matte warm pink and I've been reaching for it often.

I completely agree about the Nivea Lip Butters. I hastily purchased all 3 flavors before discovering they were nothing more than little tins of scented petrolatum. Not good to ingest and does very little for the lips. I've been using them to remove my lip color; just slathering it on and wiping it off. They actually work perfectly well for that purpose.

Can't agree about Effaclar Duo though! I use it every single day, morning and night, and it's responsible for keeping my blemishes at bay. Everyone's skin is different though. Mine responds really well to the benzoyle peroxide formula in this product and I always have to have a tube on hand.

    1. Awww thank you. I might just need to persevere with the application - it's just not something I'm particularly keen on doing when I'm in a rush in the morning! Illamasqua does make some terrific and well-loved blushes ... I was eyeing Sophie and Katie - glad to hear you've been enjoying Tremble :)

Yes, that's exactly what the Nivea Lip Butters are - scented petrolatum! You described them perfectly :p I will keep that purpose you use them for in mind! Thanks for the tip.

You're right about everyone's skin being different - there are a lot of fans of Effaclar Duo out there with you :)

  13. Great post here, I enjoyed reading your thoughts on these products. I actually agree with you on nearly all of them barring the Sleek and Illamasqua blushers, I'm reaching for the Sleek blush every day at the moment as I really like it and as for the Illamasqua one I haven't tried it myself although the swatch of it does look pretty.

I have the Caudalie Elixir and I see nothing marvellous about it at all, a product I definitely will not be re-buying.

  15. I use the Caudalie Beauty Elixir for taking down typical makeup powderiness. I do find that as a toner it's quite drying and probably isn't the greatest product, but as a midday spritz, it's a nice pick-me-up! I also use it when I'm feeling carsick, it just makes everything smell clean/fresh again.

  17. The Illamasqua blush looks so pretty! But I know what you mean about the pigment. And as for the other blush, maybe try it as an eyeshadow because it's so shimmery? I do really like the Caudalie Elixir, but it's definitely a "nice-to-have" luxury item and maybe not worth the price.

  18. The first time I smelled the Caudalie Beauty Elixir, I was so put off by it. It felt so strong and overwhelming. Then I smelled it at a different time and I felt okay about it. I still don't know whether I should buy it or not because some people can't live without it while others are on the fence about it. :/

  19. I totally agree with you on the Nivea Lip Butter! It was so overhyped and really doesn't do anything for the lips.

  20. I do agree that the Nivea lip butter is like a white Vaseline which just sits on top of the lips but I do quite like the scent and it is quite moisturising for me.
Those blushes look gorgeous , shame it didn't suit your skintone!

  21. I think some problems with over-hyped products is that people WANT to love them and convince themselves that they do, even if they don't... I love that you've put it out there that you're on the fence x

  22. Aw sorry to hear you're on the fence about the blushes! I'd love to try those both! I've been going through my things putting those i"m unsure about aside and throwing and passing some out!

  23. Looks like I'm not the only one disappointed by the Nivea Lip Butters :( I have one in Raspberry Rose, and while it does smell heavenly, it's a lot less buttery than I had imagined. It wasn't bad for a lip balm, but I definitely didn't wake up with baby soft lips like other reviews had mentioned, oh well :(

  32. Loved it "I'm just a skin care ignoramus" LOL
Anyway, may I suggest using the Caudalie Elixir as a setting spray? I know it's a bit out there but I've been doing that very same thing with two toners I don't particularly like using as such and the results were suprisingly good. I don't spray them directly to my face, more like spray them in the air and then I walk towards the mist with my eyes closed, both have alcohol in them as well : / Hope this trick helps xx

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That sounds like a good idea! I don't have that many toners but I will be sure to do that for ones that I might come across that I don't particularly like but just want to use up :p I sometimes use my Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist to make my skin a bit dewier when I think I've put on a bit too much makeup and it looks a bit 'overdone'.

      Delete
  33. That Sleek blusher looks gorgeous but like you say I think they may have gone a bit overboard with the gold shimmer, it would definitely be more wearable with a little less sparkle. Like you I am a little bit of a "skin care ignoramus" and just can't understand the hype surrounding the Beauty Elixer, especially with it's price tag! :) xx

  34. These products are just SO hyped up that you can't help the disappointment when they don't produce mind-blowing results. The Nivea lip butters are just scented lip balms, Caudalie beauty elixir is nice but not a necessity, though I've never gotten it in my eyes before. Thanks for the heads up. :p

  35. I really want to try out the Effaclar duo after reading so many positive reviews. But after reading your review, I might have to think twice about that; I don't suffer from acne and my complexion is relatively clear...
Similarly to you, I just want to "keep spots at bay and refine my skin" :)
    Great post!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Lol, 3 out of 5 are maybe some of my favourite products, and I like the look of the Sleek blush. :D The only thing I would ignore is the Nivea lip thingy because the texture never looked right even on the blogs.

It's a pity that Effaclar Duo doesn't work for you because I'm on my third tube and it combats my acne like nothing else. It's also quite gentle and doesn't aggravate the skin, so I do slather it all over because I never know where the next breakout is going to sprout.

And you know I was iffy on the Caudalie Elixir but just love the stuff lately. It's like your love of the Evian water - perhaps not beneficial at all in the end but so damn enjoyable to spritz on.

As for the Illamasqua, the super creamy texture threw me off a bit at first but now I really like it. But if the colour isn't working for you, there's not much to say - pass it on and move on! So many other nice blushers out there for you to hunt down, there's no time to waste. ;)

    1. I'm glad that the Effaclar Duo works so well for you. It's great when you find a product that genuinely delivers and helps keep your skin happy. I guess for me, I mainly just haven't been using it consistently and over a long enough period to see any noticeable difference when I do and don't use it.

I do like the Caudalie but I don't know if it really does much for me. Whenever I apply it to my face, it feels a bit drier than before. I think I have a slight preference for my Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist, though both contain alcohol as the second ingredient.

I don't find the Illamasqua creamy - I actually think it's quite powdery! I will still keep it though, for one I have no idea how to dispose of makeup or sell/swap/give it away (unless it's really crap or I know I won't use it ever again, then I will just chuck it), but this one is nice enough that I still have it in my blush drawer ... waiting for the day I'll give it another go :p

  37. I go through phases with the Caudalie Beauty Elixir, I definitely think it's nice to have and it seems to really work on me with keeping blemishes at bay. I had been tempted by the nivea lip butter but I think I'll give it a miss, not a fan of lip balms that just sit on the lips, even if they do smell amazing!

  38. I agree with your thoughts on the Nivea product. I bought two of them, in the Original blue tin and the Caramel Kiss tin, and I didn't like either. I find my lips are just as dry, if not drier, after it wears off... and it's not even particularly great whilst it's on the lips. I was disappointed, but I have a few other lip balms that I love, so I guess I shouldn't be too put out. :)

  39. I love the sweet scent of the Nivea lip butters but find them awful for my lips, and agree about them feeling waxy and just sitting on top of my lips. I also find them really drying which is no good for a lip butter! x

  47. I haven't tried any of these products before but definitely have heard a lot about a few of them. The Nivea Lip Butters were raved about so much- and I was so tempted as people loved their scents! However what put me off was what the texture looked like, and I agree with you, is definitely not plush or buttery at all. I'm also not a huge fan of lip products with petroleum or paraffin in them as they don't moisturise well at all. Rose Gold looks beautiful, but would be hard to work into everyday makeup! The Caudalie Beauty Elixir never caught my attention for some reason, and glad I haven't dabbled in it :)

I use Real Techniques' stippling brush for highly pigmented blushes (NARS Taj Mahal etc) and it looks lovely on my skin! It's the only way I can get pigmented blushes to work. Being roughly an NC20, if I tried using a normal blush brush... Clown City!

    1. Thank you Anna :)

I haven't tried the Real Techniques stippling brush for powder blushes - I feel like the bristles are relatively spiky/stiff that it would overload on the product and also overly disturb the surface of the blush itself? Maybe I'll try lightly dipping it and seeing how that works. Blush is so much about application and the brush involved - the right brush does make all the difference!

I just think it's really drying on my skin, but then again my skin has been really temperamental and it's really hard to know what works and what doesn't if I don't stick at something with any regularity. But good to hear that it's delivering for you after initially dismissing it!
