Confection Perfection

I've found my new favourite lipstick: MAC Patisserie. I tried to limit myself to just two new MAC additions while on holiday in London, Patisserie and Plumful. While I'm a bit on the fence about Plumful, I have nothing but love for Patisserie. I wasn't expecting to be as delighted with it as I am. I feared it might be one of the following things: too light, too brown, too boring, too mature, too similar to existing colours in my collection, not right for my skin tone, and myriad other potential causes for disappointment. Turns out it's a lipstick crafted so perfectly that not only do I have nothing quite like it, there's nothing about it I would change.

l-r: Revlon Honey, Revlon Pink Truffle, Revlon Blush, MAC Patisserie, Sportsgirl Pretty Please, Face of Australia Sundae, NARS Biscayne Park

MAC Patisserie is the first Lustre finish lipstick that I've tried, and I think it might be my favourite MAC lipstick finish for everyday wear. I like it a lot more than Cremesheens which despite their name, I find are a tad drying and have a tendency to tug on the lips. The Lustre finish is very comfortable on the lips, sheer and glossy but very much buildable in pigmentation. Patisserie seems unassuming and nothing particularly special or unique, but it's the truest 'my lips but better' colour I've come across. It's a light (but not pale or pastel) nude with a bit of salmon pink and peach, and the faintest gold shimmer which isn't all that visible on the lips. It imparts a soft sheen that's not too shiny or reflective. Some people have described the colour as partly mauve but I don't see it. It's very neutral in tone, not cool at all and not particularly warm either.

I pulled out a whole bunch of shades that I was interested in comparing alongside Patisserie. Ultimately, nothing came close enough to being considered a dupe. Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in Honey is darker, more purplish/raspberry. Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in Pink Truffle is the darkest of the shades I swatched and more of a brick red. Revlon ColorBurst lipstick in Blush is like a lighter version of Pink Truffle. Sportsgirl Pretty Please, which I originally thought might've been similar to Patisserie, is actually nothing like it — darker, more berry pink and opaque. Face of Australia Sheer Gloss Lip Crayon in Sundae is probably the closest match to Patisserie in terms of both colour and texture, but more brown, less blush pink, a touch darker. Finally, NARS Biscayne Park is a more pigmented peachy nude, not as pink, sheer or glossy.

Patisserie is the ideal lipstick for those that enjoy lipstick, but don't necessarily wear it a lot of the time. It's a virtually failproof option for the daytime when you want a little something on your lips that's natural, subtle and easygoing. It won't compete or clash with your existing makeup. It won't announce itself when you enter a room. It'll just make your lips look better. I liked this lipstick so much that when I began using it during my holiday, I seriously contemplated buying a backup. In the end, I talked myself out of it (Real Techniques Buffing Brush first), but I can easily see this as a perennial repurchase should I run out.

  1. Ahh Patisserie, I simply adore this lipstick! It was the first MAC lipstick I have ever purchased for myself, it is stunning on, I'm so glad I picked it up.

I also have picked up Plumful very recently, I did a review on it as I'm rather in love with it, especially now that the cold weather is here; it just adds a little something for a nice autumn look.

I really need to working on getting more lip colours! (sadly I usually only think about either eyeshadows or blush...)

  9. It's my 21st birthday in 2 weeks time and I've been planning a Mac haul to celebrate the occasion. I only had my eyes set on 1 lipstick -Shygirl but I think Patisserie warrants a purchase too. Such a beautiful shade. Looks lovely on you. Man... My poor wallet is gonna weep buckets at this point ;)

    1. No big secrets - I just use a plastic container that I bought from Daiso (I think?) ... I don't use my lipsticks all that much which is probably why they're still in good condition :p

  14. This shade had never jumped out at me before, as I didn't think it would suit my pale skin, but it looks lovely. I'm convinced, and this has definitely added itself to my wish list :)

  15. Oh my. That's so pretty! It reminds me of a pinker version of the Bare Again lipstick that I love and continually call the wrong name (occasionally when delusional I call it Barely There) but that's a Sheen Supreme so it's a bit thicker and more pigmented. Viva Glam V is a Lustre but it's way to shimmery. :( Poor decision-making. And it's nothing like Pretty Please! Glad I saved the $10 I would have spent on a way-too-pink lipstick. I'll keep an eye out for this one when I skip to China.

  17. ON THE FENCE ABOUT PLUMFUL????? Say it ain't so ;__; That aside I suppose we're talking about Patisserie here and I must say I've always been curious about it. I absolutely adore the Lustre finish from M.A.C. and I think you just piqued my interest again… it looks so pretty against your skin coloring and a true MLBB shade for you!!

    1. Haha yeah, I don't know, Plumful doesn't suit me that much. It's okay but I feel it's too much of a conservative, borderline mature-looking plummy/"rosy" shade like old school Maybelline lipsticks I had when I was first getting into makeup in high school. I think it looks better piled on, that way you can see it has a touch of vibrancy to it and the colour is more unique the deeper the lipstick is applied. It seems to suit fair skin tones much more :)

  24. This colour is so pretty! I like how it has the salmon and pink undertone in it which makes it a very wearable neutral and not a nude shade. It looks great on you and I would see why you would want a back up of it. This may potentially become my first mac lipstick hmmmm..... :3

  25. It looks really good! I would never have thought it would look like that on the lips compared to the color on the tube. Can you recommend good nudes, reds and pinks for NC30-NC35(?) :) I'm making my list so I have a mac in nude, red and pink that suit me best. Not really into warm reds though, I think it looks weird on me.

    1. Hmmm...I don't have many MAC lipsticks so I wouldn't know too much about MAC specific shades. Have you tried Revlon Mauve It Over for a nude? I don't wear too many reds but I like Revlon Lip Butter in Cherry Tart and Red Velvet. For pinks, Revlon Pink in the Afternoon, or maybe MAC Chatterbox?

    2. Will look up the Revlon Mauve it Over and Pink in the Afternoon. I actually don't like the Revlon Lip Butters! Haha I don't find it moisturizing and it settles on the lines on my lips reaaal bad. Thank you though!

  31. That shade is such a great nude! Perfect for everyday use, I love the subtleness of it. :) I should really wear more nude lipsticks since I always go for peach and pink. I think it's gonna be a fun change. :) Thanks a lot for the review and swatches hun.

Take care always, love Christine ~ xo

  32. I'm so happy that I'm not the only person in the world who thinks that Cremesheens tug on the lips!!!
Anyway, that shade is gorgeous on you, and I love your photos as always. I really enjoy the lustre finish too, but for some reason I keep going towards mattes from MAC.

  34. What a beautiful color on you! I can see why you like it so much. It's not too brown or pink... just the right amount of color in a very classic shade. :)

  36. Oh I have seen Patisserie around a LOT, and have been eyeing it off for ages. It's a perfect shade, something not too over the top and it has everything I would love in a lipstick. I read a review about a dupe for Patisserie (can be found http://www.indianvanitycase.com/2013/02/mac-modesty-lipstick-review-swatches.html), Maybelline's Colour Sensation lipstick in Totally Toffee, which I love! Never tried a MAC lipstick before though, one day I will indulge :)

  37. This is definitely something i'm missing in my lipstick stash, a nude that doesn't make me look sick. I've had such bad luck with nudes because they always wash me out. The closest i've found is MAC's shy girl and i have a bit of a love/hate relationship with it.
