Pout About It

Lipsticks are probably the best thing Sportsgirl make, beauty-wise. I have three: Beauty Queen (creme), Fruit Tingle (matte) and the newly released Rosie Posie (matte). The matte shades are intensely pigmented and bright, almost neon if layered on straight from the tube. The downside, as with mattes in general, is that they can be a little drying. The creme formulation is much sheerer and more moisturising, but not as long-lasting. Beauty Queen, which I bought quite a while ago, started my denial about my ability to wear light pink lipsticks. I don't think it works for my skin tone, but I try anyway. Fruit Tingle is a very summery and loud orange with reddish peachy tones. I usually tone the colour down by dabbing it on with a layer of lip balm underneath. Rosie Posie is a red-leaning bright pink with watermelon and coral tones, similar to Revlon Pink About It but less orange.

The shade selection is limited, I think there's 4 in the permanent line (Bombshell, Beauty Queen, All About You and Fruit Tingle) and a couple of new shades that get released and then discontinued (e.g. Juicy Watermelon, Fuchsia Splash, Neon Lights and Tangerine Queen). I regret not getting Neon Lights when it was available (my blind optimism in finding the perfect pink is eternal), so the lesson is if you like any of the new shades, get them while you can. Along with Rosie Posie, there's also the recently released Night Owl, a burgundy/plummy/wine shade labelled as a matte but with more of a creme formulation.

  8. I've always stayed away from orange shades but Fruity Tingle is gorgeous! Gah, I didn't know some shades were limited edition. I've always had my eye on Juicy Watermelon and didn't know it would be discontinued. Boo! xx

    1. I think you'll like it, there's enough peachiness and a bit of red in it so it's not completely orange. Juicy Watermelon was a shade that I was set on getting, but when I tried it instore it looked horrible on me :p I'm sure I have something similar as well. I'm still sad Sportsgirl discontinued their "Storm" nail polish lol. I loved that shade!

    1. It is super bright and pigmented, but I didn't wear it to maximum effect :p I put a layer of balm underneath and blotted, then kind of just dabbed it on. Otherwise it's very neon (both it and Rosie Posie) :)

    1. The formulation isn't too bad for a matte lipstick, especially with a layer of balm over the lips. The creme formulation is super moisturising, kind of like a gloss almost. They're $9.95 Australian dollars each, so quite affordable (at least in comparison to the price of cosmetics here, where a Revlon Super Lustrous lipstick is $21.95!) :)

    1. They're not too bad for a matte formulation, though I guess it depends on the state of your lips. They can be a little drying but generally I always put a thin layer of balm first :)

I own two matte lipsticks my Wet n Wild and they are really pretty... it feels like you are coating your lips with clay though cause its soo thick and crazy pigmented :)

    1. I love the name Night Owl too! Almost makes me want to go out and buy the lipstick purely because of the name lol :) I've not tried Wet n Wild lipsticks but I've heard some great things about them - that they're very pigmented and creamy but super affordable as well. I know what you mean by the feeling of coating your lips in clay because of how thick and pigmented a lipstick is, I can just imagine it! These ones aren't at that level, but the matte shades do get quite neon when layered on and a tad drying, but fine with some lip balm underneath :)

  28. I've been eyeing Beauty Queen for the longest time ever!! I keep having 'cravings' for a creamy barbie pink and I found them at Sports Girl! However, my bf freaked me out when he said 'Sports girl doesn't specialise in makeup. You trust them??' and seriously that got me thinking. Horrid bf!

After reading this post, I think I'll give Sportsgirl lipsticks a try! Thank you for the review and for the pretty pictures!

    1. Haha, well they're only $9.95 each so worth the gamble in my opinion, especially if you like the look of a certain shade. Beauty Queen is very moisturising and glossy and I think it would lovely on fairer complexions. It's quite sheer as well, which makes it all the more wearable and you can build up the intensity of colour :)

  30. Oooh loving Rosie Posie! The swatches remind me of Sweet Tart of the Revlon Lip Butters.

    1. They are a little similar, except Rosie Posie is brighter and has more of a coral undertone (and of course is more pigmented and less glossy, being a full on matte lipstick) :)

  31. I've never tried anything from Sportsgirl's makeup range. Perhpas because no one ever talks about it. This makes me want to have a bit of a look though.

Also it's surprising to see how different Rosie Posie looks on your lips compared to the swatch on your hand. No wonder you have a hard time finding a pink that suits you. They practically transform on your lips. Oh and just as a side note, I thought you pulled off some of the more pink toned lip butters quite well :)

    1. I don't have too many of their products, but I always liked their lipstick range (as limited as it is). I also have their felt tip eyeliner pen which I quite like and a whole bunch of their nail polishes. I would stay away from their eyeshadows though, as generally they're not that pigmented or nicely textured.

My lips are relatively dark and pigmented, which I think makes shades instantly darker and more purple, lol. I really gravitate towards light pink shades, especially how they look in the tube, but applied they tend to have this purplish undertone or generally just clash with my yellowish skin tone. I sometimes really wish I were very fair so I could wear a whole bunch of colours that I don't think look all that great on me with the skin tone I have :p But thanks for the sweet and supportive comment Courtney :)

  34. I've never tried any of these as they're not widely available in the UK, but these shades look absolutely gorgeous, I'm so jealous you can pull off corals so well, I am constantly stuck wearing pale pinks due to my pasty skin tone! xx

    1. It's funny how we want what we can't have, I wish I had fairer skin so I could wear light pinks! I'm sure corals would look great on you, they're instantly brightening for pretty much anyone. I guess it's about finding the right shade for you :) I think Sportsgirl is only available in Australia but it's kind of like our Topshop, I'm sure there are plenty of brands with similar shades/formulations :)

    1. Their beauty range is fairly limited, they discontinue a lot of stuff quite quickly (I guess kind of like their fashion, new stock comes and goes so soon). I haven't tried too much of their stuff, though I generally don't think their eyeshadows are that great. They make pretty decent lipsticks for $10 (and cheaper on sale), especially their "on trend" shades, so if you like lipsticks they might be fun to try out :) Who knows, you might just be pleasantly surprised ;)

  42. Nice, I can definitely see them working for the up and coming sunny months! I like them but don't think any will suit me right now! I'm a combination of three shades at the moment, my limbs are very tan, my neck and chest a lighter shade and my face the fairest! Oh dear!

Well I picked up some lippies recently too! from topshop! My first TS make up buy! But no corals or pinks for summer times but dark bold shades I've been craving! :)
