Child's Play

Like a YSL Rouge Volupté lipstick, Benefit boxed powder or NARS blush, Clinique Chubby Sticks are something I've always wanted to own but deemed too expensive. At $35 each, they're more than what I'm comfortable spending for merely another lip product I don't need. I've started to realise how illogical that mindset is, since I seem to have no issues spending small amounts here and there for cheaper items, when with the same or less cost, I could buy one higher end product that I'd (hopefully) really adore. Time to reevaluate my spending habits. Luckily, my generous friend recently came back from an overseas holiday and brought me this Chubby Stick in Woppin' Watermelon as a gift. I was genuinely thrilled as it's not something I would've bought for myself and I've always been curious to try one.

Woppin' Watermelon is a natural looking light pink. Built up, the colour looks more like a toned down fuchsia, but still appears relatively bright. I didn't expect it to be so sheer, but I actually like that it's not super pigmented. I don't have many lip products that are on the subtle side. Even the Revlon Lip Butters, said to be a cross between a balm and a lipstick, were really just lipsticks, and my beloved Korres Lip Butters are much more pigmented as well (Pomegranate and Wild Rose especially). The balm texture combined with the sheer tint is ideal when you want to add a bit of colour to the lips without it being obvious, though the colour does wear off fairly quickly and isn't staining. As Nic from Pixiwoo put it in this Kim Kardashian wedding makeup video (where she uses Woppin' Watermelon in the look), the sheer wash of colour from the Chubby Stick is a good choice for brides, as it eliminates issues with lipstick transferring and wearing off, or lip gloss getting stuck in your hair. My only issue is that I don't think these are as moisturising as they could be as the texture feels slightly thin and waxy on the lips.

I'm now wondering whether I should've picked up the Face of Australia Sheer Gloss Lip Crayons which are a much more affordable alternative (the colours just didn't seem to work for me when I swatched them, and now I can't find them anywhere). I'm also looking forward to the Australian release of the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains, though no doubt they'll be horrendously overpriced. But at least now with my one Chubby Stick, I've finally experienced the novelty of literally colouring in my lips with an oversized crayon.

  2. This looks gorgeous on you. This is the closest I've gotten to a Clinique Chubby Stick, but I do have the Revlon version, and that is really moisturizing.
I really love this colour though!

  9. This colour is the perfect candy pink on you :) I don't think I could part with $35 for one of these though. However I'm so tempted to buy some Revlon balm stains on ebay!

  14. I think the idea of crayoning the lips is so cute. I'd never expect brands like clique and revlon would adapt the idea into their products. But they did and it's such an intriguing concept. The product name "chubby sticks" is simply adorable! Describes the product quite well, haha. The final look is lovely on you, perfect for those fun and casual days.. Just wondering though, how does the scent appear to you? Is it relevant to its name? Because I'm a big fan of anything watermelon. :)

    1. Me too! I love watermelon anything. But these aren't scented, they smell faintly of plastic if anything, but that's holding it up really close to my nose :p

  15. This very same chubby stick is actually my current favorite lip product. I as well like that it is on the sheer side, and I also like that it moisturizes my lips without drying them out when the product wears off.

  16. That color is so nice!! The name of the product is so cute!! I was wondering, is there a scent to the product?

    1. No, no scent. Nothing sweet or fruity or minty, it's more of a faint plastic smell than anything, but it's not offensive or all that noticeable :)

  18. This Clinique stick is so famous, but I have never tried it either! The color is a pretty subtle pink! You're so right about the part where you say how we all buy products to save money. But with me, there are times when I end spending MORE trying to find a dupe for it, when I could have just bought the original product in the first place. But anyways, that was nice of your friend to get it for you!

  28. I've always wanted to get one of these Clinique Chubby Sticks too! I really love sheer lip colors that you can build up. And also these are so cute and CHUBBY. The color looks fabulous on you! I might just go get one in the future. I have one of those Tarte lip stains (that also look like giant crayons) though, so maybe I'll get another one of those instead since it probably lasts slightly longer than this? (Sorry for the rambling aha)

  29. That color looks fabulous on you! I have a couple of the revlon pencils but just haven't gotten around to using them. There is a mint scent that is too strong for my taste. Let me know if you're interested!

  30. I can completely relate with the many cheap vs. lone expensive product dilemma. Pricey purchases are always difficult to justify!

Woppin' Watermelon seems like a very cute colour, shame that it's not as moisturising as expected. If you're looking for a stain, Rimmel has some new ones called '1000 Kisses Lip Tint'. I swatched them as well as the YSL Glossy Stains on the same day, and although YSL had a more pigmented stain initally, Rimmel stained for longer. They also had similar colours :)

  31. I was just at Priceline and saw the new Rimmel 1000 kisses stain balms, they look really nice, so maybe that is an option for you? I won one of the Clinique chubby sticks when they were first released and love them colour and feel, but they don't last very long on my lips. I am tempted to try the FOA pack now that Kmart have a $3 off promo- you should get it from there!

  32. Haha, I love colouring in my lips with a crayon too. I haven't tried any of these Chubby Sticks but it seems your friend picked our a perfect, safe colour for you! It looks like something you could wear every day :) xx

  33. The color is so beautiful on you! I haven't tried these yet, but I like the ease of use. I like that the finish is a bit glossy too.

  35. That's a really lovely color on you! I also like more sheer coverage on lipsticks, since it looks more natural and I don't have to worry about how it wears off.

  36. I really want to try a Chubby Stick but I have to agree with you, they're so expensive and I'm not sure how comfortable I am with handing over that amount of money for what looks like a crayon!

    Champagne tastes, lemonade money :(

  40. I really wanted to get the Clinique chubby sticks but decided to wait for a little longer since I just bought a bunch of Revlon balm stain off ebay. This looks really good though. I am a little tempted to pick one up now... I didn't expect the chubby sticks to be quite as pigmented as this.

  42. This looks lovely on you! Although, I think I'll just go with the Revlon Just Bitten Lip Stains because I feel like the Clinique Chubby Sticks aren't that novel or any better in quality...

    ReplyDelete
  43. haha that would be fun, drawing over your lips with a cosmetic crayon. I've never seen a lip product like this before. From what that beauty guru on Youtube's said about the product it seems like it would be very practical, not just for brides! I hate it when the product smudges and especially when hair gets stuck to my lips!

  45. Ohhh, this shade looks soooo pretty on you!! So fresh, fun and wearable! Like how shiny it looks too~ I've read some good reviews so far on FOA's Crayons, but not sure if they are still around, were they LE?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Aww, thanks! They are definitely still around but they have been marketed as LE. They're not a bad deal considering how affordably priced they are (especially if you get them on sale - they're currently 20% at Priceline), and also if you want to jump on the jumbo sheer lip crayon bandwagon :)
