Seeing, Not Having

I really need to go on a spending ban. I was supposed to go on a spending ban after my overseas trip, but failed spectacularly (I've since purchased Illamasqua Zygomatic, and two nail polishes and a bronzer that are in the mail). I'm finding that as my cosmetic obsession broadens, my wishlists are in turn getting longer and more out of hand. I enjoying making these collages though — it's almost therapeutic. Even just looking at everything is a treat for the eyes and takes the edge off wanting to go out and spend.

1. Clarins Eye Quartet Mineral Palette in Odyssey
I've seen this pop up on blogs everywhere (most recently Sandra and Sophia). The absolute last thing I need (apart from more pink lipstick) is more neutral eyeshadow, but the packaging and that gold shade are beautiful on a whole new level. I believe this palette will retail for $50 in Australia. Maybe I'll splurge as a Christmas present to myself ... not that I deserve it.

2. Clarisonic Mia
I was this close to buying this while in the US, but hesitated for some reason. Naturally, now that I'm back home, it's been a fixture on my mind. I feel like this might be a more justifiable purchase than more makeup, because at least there's no expiry date, and it's supposed to improve the condition of my skin, something makeup is probably doing the opposite of. But at the same time, skin care just doesn't get me buzzed the way makeup and nail polish does, so my interest isn't an overwhelming, "must have it now" urge.

3. Sigma Mrs. Bunny Essential Kit
If money were no object, this would be mine. But I really don't see myself forking out $109 (not including shipping) for a brush set, no matter how tempting, especially with my first (and only) experience with Sigma's shipping being disappointing. I actually hardly ever use my Sigma F82 or F84, but I do remember being really impressed by the quality and density of the brushes when I first opened them up. I really want to try Sigma's eye brushes and the F40, which are included in this set.

4. Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate
I'm delving more into the world of serums, and this one by Kiehl's looks like an attractive option. The price is much kinder than Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair, though it doesn't garner the rave reviews I've read about ANR. I don't know, do these things really work? Only one way to find out.

5. Stila Smudge Crayon Waterproof Eye Colour in Smoke
I'm such a sucker for cream products, and I've yet to explore the novelty of having a cream eyeshadow in a stick. This product would've never even been brought to my attention had I not seen my friend bring it out of her purse on a night out. I asked her what eyeshadow she was wearing and she showed me this Stila crayon. I tried it on my lower lashline while we were at the restaurant (as you do), and loved it. I was this close to buying it with my latest Beauty Bay nail polish order, but somehow managed to find unbelievable restraint in removing it from my cart (along with the In the Light palette).

6. OPI polishes in GoldenEye and The Living Daylights (part of the James Bond Skyfall collection)
I think I'm going to have to resort to the Australian retail price of these ($19.95), but that's how much I want these two. I've been meaning to get myself to a David Jones or some nail salon, but just haven't found the time. Why couldn't these have been released when I was in the US? GoldenEye is stunning and I can't miss the only glitter polish of the collection.

7. Morrocanoil Treatment
I've heard about this product for the longest time, but never paid much attention until recently. Hair is the one thing I basically do nothing with, and my locks are finally paying the price for a prolonged period of neglect. The ends particularly are really dry and dull. I'm hoping this might restore them to some level of glossiness and strength.

8. Benefit Sun Beam
How I wish I lived in the UK so I could nab a 4ml bottle of this with InStyle. My small bottle of High Beam (included in the Go TropiCORAL Lip & Cheek Kit) has exceeded my expectations, so now I have my sights on Sun Beam for the summer. I prefer peachy/bronze highlighters to yellow/gold or pearlescent pinks, so Sun Beam seems more up my alley. The texture of these highlighters are so smooth and blend in effortlessly into the skin, and a small amount goes a long way.

9. YSL Rouge Volupte Lipstick in Peach Passion
This particular lipstick has been on my wishlist since before I even became all that interested in makeup. I was fully prepared to buy one in the US, but for whatever reason, never found the opportunity to. Peach Passion was either sold out when I wanted buy it (e.g. at duty free), or I passed on it when it was available, thinking I'd buy it later. The gorgeous lipstick bullet is about 80% of the appeal, while Peach Passion seems to be the shade I'd be happiest with.

10. NARS Joie de Vivre Oversized Anniversary Cheek Palette
Seriously, where can I buy this that isn't Ebay at some ridiculously hiked up price? I would willingly pay the retail US price for it to be in my possession. It's unavailable on the Nordstrom website and I've more or less given up hope that it'll ever be mine. After buying my first NARS blush, I feel the desire to accumulate more NARS blushes brewing...

11. Chanel Illusion d’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in Illusoire
I've still yet to own anything Chanel, but this and Vitalumiere Aqua are my picks. I've wanted this for months, but the price has always put me off, especially for something so shimmery and potentially unsuitable for daytime wear. I've yet to come across an affordable alternative in a similar shade to Illusoire, so this may be a treat to myself should I manage to stick to a spending ban until at least Christmas.

  7. I had a rather awful experience with Sigma as an affiliate, which I'm still debating whether I should make a post about it or not and no matter how good their brushes are, I can't support that brand anymore. They sure have eye-catching brush sets, but when we pay for them we're basically supporting the company in one way or another and I find the way they carry themselves and treat some of their affiliates not ok. I decided I no longer wish to use the brushes I have and sold them to a makeup artist friend. She has some Mac brushes and told me they were inferior in quality in comparison and that she would rather pay extra money for better quality and performance brushes. I guess that's why Pixiwoo just uses RT and Mac ^^

    1. Oh really? I'm sorry to hear that. What happened? I don't really know anything about being a Sigma affiliate or how it works. I know that Sigma have made relationships with some high profile bloggers and seem to be utilising the beauty blogosphere to power their brand and promote their products quite successfully. I'm mainly curious to try some of their other brushes since I've only experienced the kabuki range. However I'm 100% satisfied with my Real Techniques brushes so I know that I do not really need the Sigma ones :)

  10. That Clarins palette, be still my beating heart <3 Love the look of that Nars cheek palette too, but I don't use my Danmari cheek palette often enough as it is. I use the Kiehls serum and find it makes my skin supple and behave itself :)

    1. Well it was you that brought the Kiehl's to my attention in the first place! :) Yes, I remember reading about you buying the Danmari palette (I think it was the 7 Deadly Sins of Beauty tag) ... I guess it's one of those things that you intensely covet, but once you have it, you're not in any rush to use it. Because it's always going to be there in your possession to use whenever you feel like it. Did you buy yours at Mecca?

  12. Illamasqua Zygomatic is a pretty abstract shade, but should be interesting. It's taking a lot of self-restraint not to get the blush duo! Yours is a choice wishlist- I echo the NARS Joie de Vivre, Clarisonic and YSL Rouge Volupte. I like to think of my wishlist more as a shopping list- albeit a long term and very self-indulgent one, but a few months ago I decided that I would treat myself with an item on my wishlist after any particularly stressful exam seasons or when I'm feeling chuffed with my spending-related self-control (oh, the irony). I think the only reason I haven't 'invested' in a NARS blush yet is because I'm faced with only being able to choose ONE and there are SO many to choose from! My shortlisted selection is pretty consistent though: Deep Throat, Sin, Luster, maybe Orgasm. I'd probably buy it off SNet because they're only $32 there. I loved the little story about the Stila Smudge Crayon- I need beauty junkie friends! Did you finally cave and get Deborah Lippmann's from BeautyBay? Which bronzer did you purchase?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Lol no, Deborah Lippmann is way out of my budget :p The maximum I'm willing to pay for nail polish is $20, and that's for limited edition OPIs that I simply can't wait for or be bothered to track down for cheaper. I bought the Stila bronzer off SNet, it was cheap, like $9.50. Such an impulse buy! It hasn't arrived though, which is a bit annoying since SNet is usually super fast with their shipping. I forgot they even sold NARS blushes. $32 is not bad at all - pretty much the same as US retail prices. Have you tried any of the shades that you have your eye on? Do you guys have a Mecca Cosmetica?

I previously did construct my "wishlists" more as shopping lists - for example, I've ended up accumulating the majority of my past wishlist items, but I'm come to a point where I simply have more than enough, and then some, so even if I could go out and buy all of these things, I know that I simply shouldn't. So that's why it's more about visualising and being content with just imagining the items I want, because I know I'll feel bad if I gave in.

I really like Zygomatic, especially paired with the LM mineral powder. I don't really use it with liquid foundation since it's a pretty emollient cream blush and I feel like I'd be mixing the two (blush + foundation) on the surface of my skin. You should just cave and get the blush duo ;) Maybe not immediately, but I know you will eventually! Why delay the inevitable? :p

For now, I'm just looking and putting items in my Sephora wishlist. I enjoy my Sigma brushes a lot. I am most impressed with my synthetic brushes and I love my eye precision set. Love the Chanel cream shadow you picked. I have the Emerville and loving it so much. Want to get another shade. It is pricey but definitely worth it!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Haha don't say that ;) I don't need any more encouragement! Yes, I read your review on Emerville. However I'd be more interested to wear these as eyeshadows rather than bases. I'm guilty of a lot of impulse buying as well ... really need to curb that kind of expenditure. It's more rewarding to spend more on something that you really want, than several cheaper items that you never set out to buy in the first place!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I really like High Beam! I don't mind the liquid texture, because I still find it sufficiently creamy to blend into the skin. It's not like watery or anything. What I like most about High Beam is that it truly doesn't contain obvious glitter particles. It just gives a glow/sheen that doesn't have shimmer in it, just illumination. I'm sorry that it disappointed you! Have you tried theBalm's Mary-Lou Manizer?

  20. I've seen pictures of the Clarins palette too. The gold shade is totally unreal! I agree with you, something about skincare just doesn't draw me in as much as the prettiies of makeup. Though it should be the opposite, because I should really take care of my skin rather than just put stuff on, haha. :)

    1. I think that makeup junkies can go through a phase where they become more interested in skin care as they reach the limit to how much makeup they can actually buy and use. I kind of felt that recently, but at the same time, I don't think that I got any amazing results with new skin care stuff I was using, so I kind of lost interest a bit. Plus I always think that improving your skin is more about hormones/genes, diet, exercise, water, sleep, lack of stress etc. rather than products slapped onto your face :p

I did want to buy some Chanel things at duty free, but the foundation I wanted was sold out in the shade I was after, and for whatever reason, I still hesitated at shelling out for the cream eyeshadow. From memory the prices at duty free weren't even that much cheaper ... if at all cheaper :S I think the only difference, at least in the US, was you didn't have to pay the sales tax.

And yes, I thought about the Sigma brush set when I saw it on your recent wishlist! You reminded me that I'd be interested in getting it for quite a while, but I've always dismissed it in my mind because of the price.

  29. It's amazing how I lust after everything you have on this list! I definitely find the best way to stop myself from spending some money is making a list of all the things I want, then I just pick out that one item I'm dying for and grab it. Usually I'm so infatuated with that product that I forget about the others, at least for a little while ;)

I have that Sigma set by the way, and its absolutely fab. Of course there are some brushes I don't really use, but I'm such a fan of cream makeup products that I had to grab a synthetic brush set. Sigma's always doing little 10% off codes for the month, and hey who knows they might do something fun for Christmas so you could get the set at a cheaper price :)

    1. Oooh, thanks for the heads up. Yes, they might do a Christmas sale or something. It would have to be a mega sale for me to buy it though! I know it is an investment and when the price is broken down into the cost of the individual brushes, it's probably relatively good value, but I still can't bring myself to pay that much, especially when I have a lot of brushes already.

I like the tip of making a wishlist and then just buying the item that I want the most. Good process of eliminating extra spending!
