The Gold Standard

Despite having more than 80 lipsticks at last count, I've only recently purchased my first one from Yves Saint Laurent. I've long admired these gilded bullets of magnificence, but at $55 a pop, I wasn't sure I could justify the splurge. Enter the utterly enabling environment of duty-free airport shopping, and the Rouge Volupté Shine in Corail Intuitive (15) was mine. As always, picking the shade was a difficult task, but Jennifer convinced me to go for something on the bright and peachy side.

l-r: Revlon Juicy Papaya, Lancome Blush Classique, YSL Corail Intuitive, Revlon Peach Parfait, Maybelline Mango Diamonds

I predicted I'd have a few similar shades to Corail Intuitive and it's no surprise that I absolutely do. The closest is probably Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in Juicy Papaya. It's brighter in tone, slightly more neon, and also thicker in texture and less emollient. Lancome L'Absolu Rouge in Blush Classique (337) is very similar texturally to the Rouge Volupté Shine, but distinctly more pink in colour and more shimmery. Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in Peach Parfait is grittier in texture due to the chunky gold shimmer, and more beige/rosy in colour compared to the YSL, which is more orange/coral and slightly lighter. Maybelline ColorSensational "The Shine" Lipstick in Mango Diamonds (445) is darker yet brighter in tone, more red-leaning and not as sheer.

There's not much to fault with YSL Rouge Volupté Shine in Corail Intuitive. I'm a fan of the fruity, sweet scent, it has a sheer, lightweight, moisturising formula that glides on but doesn't settle into lip lines, it's not super pigmented making it ideal for everyday wear but can also be built up in intensity for a punchier look, it imparts the lips with a soft, plumped up sheen that isn't overly glossy, and then there's the packaging. I'll be the first to admit it was about 85% of my motivation to purchase. It's an object of art to be appreciated when placed on your vanity or retrieved from your purse for touch ups. Without a doubt, this is the single most glamorous lipstick in my collection.

  5. That is a gorgeous shade, it looks wonderful on you. I have an almost overflowing lipstick collection (although I'm planning on doing a bit of a cull soon as I own shades I never wear) and yet I too have never tried one of these for myself! The bullets are beautiful but the price tag has always put me off. I think this is the sort of thing I'd add to a christmas or birthday wish list as I'd love to own one but would find it so hard to actually bite the bullet and buy one for myself xx

  9. I'm glad you got on with this lipstick, but I really DID NOT like them, and I'm not even that attached to the packaging. I happily passed mine on to my mom, though, so it's not so bad. :)

  11. We are twins - even though I have a rather large lipstick collection I only recently splurged on a YSL and got a similar color! They truly are stunning.

  12. I like this type of lipsticks <3 I just hate the price. I would get a Too Faced la créme instead :/ The formula is as good and it's more affordable when compared to this one (at least here) But this shade is just...perfect <3

  13. Oh this is a very pretty shade, I can imagine it for everyday wear.. I do own one YSL lipstick from the Rouge Volupte Sheer Candy line. But, the formula is very wet and slippery so I am not a fan.. This one sounds better though! I think I should have gotten this one instead of the sheer candy. I'll give it a look later :)

  17. I have this same exact lipstick in the same exact color. It's my absolute favorite, especially since it is subtle on my lips. I can usually get away with it as an every day lip color. It makes me feel so chic just whipping it out of my bag and applying it. Also, I'm A VERY HUGE FAN of the scent, too.

  20. Very nice colour! Love it. YSL lipsticks are definitely a luxury and, for me, even a collectors edition. I would keep the packaging even after finishing the lipstick, haha.

  21. You made a great choice because that shade looks awesome on you. From what everyone says about the smell, I probably won't like it very much, but I've ventured into other YSL lip products now and there's no turning back. Yay/ugh.

  22. I agree with everyone who's commented so far, this shade looks fantastic with your coloring! I'm unfortunately not a fan of the YSL fruity scent, I actually had to return a gloss in the past because of that :(
