Gloss Goss

Despite the increasingly disturbing amount of lipstick I have, I'm not a huge lip gloss girl. It's just not something I reach for or feel like I want to use all that much. The main reason is I don't quite get the appeal. If I want some colour on my lips, I'll reach for a lipstick. If I want some hydration, I'll reach for a balm. What I don't find myself wanting a whole lot is shiny lips. Especially when said shiny lips attract stray hairs that later stick on your face or glasses. Every now and then (most crucially, when I'm not exposed to wind or my hair is up), I'll whip out a lip gloss and wear it for fun. Something about the colour, or glossiness, or mintiness, or smooth and lush feel of them will redeem my opinion. Here are five of my favourites.

l-r: PK 24, Red Riot, Mauve Pout, Jammy, Who Are You Wearing?

VOV Hi-tech Lip Polish in PK 24
This is the prettiest light pink that just seems to work with the natural pigmentation of my lips. It feels smooth and luxurious when applied (I'm not sure if it's something to do with the sponge applicator or the formulation, or both) and smells of juicy strawberry candy. It's glossy but not in a shiny way, and moisturising without being too sticky or liquid.

CoverGirl Wetslicks AmazeMint in Red Riot (630)
It looks like the most incredible red in the tube, but is actually very sheer. On the lips, it gives the slightest cherry red tint but the colour is barely there. I actually like the fact it's not very pigmented, as it feels light and fresh on. Something easy to just slick on for a bit of understated gloss and tint to the lips. I absolutely love the sweet mint smell and the cooling, tingling sensation it leaves when applied.

Revlon Super Lustrous Plumping Lipgloss in Mauve Pout (07)
Probably the most pigmented lip gloss that I have, I appreciate that it's pure colour and contains no shimmer (so there's no grittiness). I'm not sure why the shade is called Mauve Pout as I don't detect any purple whatsoever. It looks more like a dark rosy pink with brown and coral tones. The formulation is excellent and feels like that of a higher end brand. Super smooth, high colour, glossy, a little on the thick side, but very comfortable on the lips.

Rimmel Sweet Jelly Sheer Lipgloss in Jammy (050)
I've almost used up my tube and repurchased this gloss a few times before it was discontinued. I believe that they were replaced with Royal Gloss Delicious Lipgloss, which I have in Yummy (121). Both are very similar, but I still infinitely prefer Sweet Jelly. Like the CoverGirl Wetslicks, these are very sheer and not very pigmented. While I find the scent of the Royal Gloss cloying and overpowering, Sweet Jelly has more of a juicy fruity smell. Additionally, Sweet Jelly literally has a sweet taste. Not that I make a meal of my lip gloss, but from experience, most lip glosses either taste like nothing or are unpleasant to inadvertently digest. Not Sweet Jelly. There may have been the odd occasion where I found myself licking my lips a little more often when I had this on.

Benefit Her Glossiness in Who Are You Wearing?
I forgot I had this lip gloss for the longest time, it's embarrassingly ancient and I was debating whether or not to include it in this list as it has its flaws. I'm not a fan of the artificial, sickly sweet scent and I find it slightly stings my lips. But the colour is everything. I wish I could find a lipstick equivalent. It's a hot pink but due to its consistency and sheerness, it applies like a warm, slightly brightening but still natural pink. As a gloss, it cancels out the purple of blue-based pinks and adds pigmentation to paler pinks.

  1. I totally agree with the bizarre nature of glosses. I find myself reaching for tinted balms more than ever, but never my glosses. I do, however, love the look of Mauve Pout. :) x

    1. I'm not into the gloopy and liquidy and super shiny ones, that's for sure :p I do love tinted balms though I don't have many of them. I like the Revlon Beyond Natural Protective Lip Tint :)

  2. I've been wearing lipstick more often lately, because of the whole hair stuck on lips and lipgloss marks across my cheeks! I have so many lip glosses though. Love the colours of your favourites :) x

  3. I def agree! I am also not a lip gloss fan. I think I just don't like the sticky feeling and the shine it gives. I prefer lipstick or tinted lip balm instead of lip gloss. But still I think I have too many lip glosses for someone who claims she doesn't like lip gloss *sigh*

    1. Hehe, it doesn't hurt to give one or two (or 20) lying around anyway :) They have their merits and purpose depending on the occasion, especially on top of lipstick to moisturise the lips or slightly change the colour.

  4. I used to be a huge gloss girl but now I love lipsticks more! :) I agree it's annoying when your hair just constantly sticks to your lips...
I find glosses nice when put over the top of a lipstick though!

    1. Agreed, that's probably the best purpose of them. Especially if the lipstick is matte or a bit on the drying side and has sunken into the fine lines of your lips, the gloss gives much needed moisture :)

  5. I'm not a lipgloss person either - can't stand my hair being glued to my lips. LOL!

'Who are you wearing' is such a gorgeous colour though! But it's bad news if it makes your lips sting or tingle.

    1. It doesn't sting too much, but there's definitely something there. Kind of how I imagine a plumping/"lip venom"-type gloss to feel when worn, though it's probably not meant to be like that :p

  6. I actually love lip glosses but I agree, it's annoying when they get caught up in your hair! Being sticky is not fun xo

  9. :D i'm not a lip gloss girl either! in fact i only have one out of my make up collection hahah! it's a mac cremesheen (non sticky formula). actually, it turned me off the first time i've ever tried mac lip glosses (at least their mac lip glasses, they were soooo sticky! yuck). mauve pout is very pretty tho!

  10. I don't find myself wearing lipgloss that much anymore either! I'm more of a lipstain/lipstick girl now. I don't know why I bought so many glosses back then, how am I supposed to get rid of them now!??! LOL!

    1. The perpetual problem of a makeup addict :p I have a lot of lip glosses from when I was younger, including a boatload of Caboodles (I don't even know if that brand was international but it was all the rage when I was in high school, lol). Think it's time to bin all of them now...

  16. I can completely relate - I'm less drawn to glosses and more so to balms or lipsticks. No matter how "unsticky" the formula claims, it always tends to attract stray hairs when I wear it! So frustrating!

  22. These are some really cute colors. I especially like Mauve Pout a lot. I have dry lips so I do prefer glosses over lipsticks, but I hate overly shiny lips too. I have pretty full lips so the last thing I want to do is make them appear even larger! lol

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Mauve Pout is really nice for the summer, it's more or less a dusty coral colour, if that makes sense. Lip glosses are great for drier lips due to being more moisturising, though I'd still prefer a lip balm :)

      Delete
  23. So pretty! I am a lipgloss person simply because I want lip color that is both non-drying, has color, and has that plump lips look. Or rather, I was scared out of lipstick because my first was way too drying. haha. And I think I need another lipgloss! I don't own any of these you featured. It's so nice that all your favorites are very affordable drugstore one save for the one Benefit.

    1. Lipstick can be a bit drying which is a problem that lip gloss doesn't have. I didn't really think about the plumping properties of lip gloss, but that's definitely a positive for some and a reason why they're lip gloss fans :)

  24. As I age, I wear less lip gloss. However, I do wear them on special occasions to give lips a touch of shine. You have a good collection. I haven't tried any of these but would love to try the Revlon one.

  28. I have acquired quite a few lip glosses in hope that I would be using them, but for the same reasons as yourself, I find myself not really reaching for them as opposed to my lipsticks. If I want that extra glossy lip look, I tend to go for a more balm textured gloss, like my Clarins Colour Quench lip balm which is not sticky but still provides a glossy finish.

Mauve Pout looks like a really pretty shade and seems to have great pigmentation! I haven't tried the Rimmel one but too bad they discontinued it.

    1. I do prefer the texture of lip balms to lip glosses - but then again, I don't find myself often wanting an extra glossy lip. I think Mauve Pout is more for the summer, it's like a dusty coral colour which would probably go well with a tan :) I've not tried Clarins Colour Quench lip balm but it sounds lovely. I do wish they didn't discontinue Jammy :(

  37. I forgot to add... I procrastinated for ages to organise my makeup collection but once I have done it, the result is really rewarding. I find Muji prices to be quite expensive though.. that's why I went with Ikea and Daiso and I think it looked quite decent.

    1. I need to check out IKEA, I haven't been there in ages. I did have a look at Daiso and couldn't find too much in terms of makeup organisation, though I picked up a few things, mostly plastic compartment/open container type things. I used them to arrange the blush/eyeshadows/lipsticks that were scattered around outside the main drawer that I keep my makeup, and the result is that I'm more organised, which is pleasing. Still need to do a major organisation though!

  42. I'm on the same boat as you - if I want colour I reach for my lipsticks and I reach balms for moisture. But I do like these glosses that you picked out! There's also one more thing aside from the stickyness that makes me not the lipgloss girl - my pigmented lips. Although some glosses do have colour, they're not enough to cover up my natural lip colour which ends up looking all the same to me =_= sigh haha

    ReplyDelete
  43. errh I shuddered when you mentioned hair getting stuck in lipgloss! I hate that! If I'm going to wear a gloss I tend to go for a more pigmented one.. so at least the texture contributes something to the colour of my lips.. I'm not a fan of clear glosses!
