Sugar Sample

I really didn't expect to like Benefit Sugarbomb as much as I do. I’d always dismissed it as too light, more of a highlighting shade than a serious blush. After buying way too much at Benefit in Bloomingdale's on my New York holiday, the sales assistant threw this sample in as a freebie. I managed to not open it until now, and it was love at first swipe.

l-r: Essence Asian Sensation (light peach side), Benefit Coralista, NARS Deep Throat, Benefit Sugarbomb

Sugarbomb is a soft tan and sherbet orange mix, with a pale gold pearlescent finish. The combination sounds a little strange, but it makes sense when I think about it. Pink can always lean too red, orange can look a bit too bright, unnatural or red again, and a more nude/tan colour just isn't too exciting or fresh. But a soft orange tinged with brown and a touch of pink mimics the skin and blends seamlessly. I find the shimmer isn't as crazy as Coralista. However, while it imparts a luminous glow, it will also highlight imperfections or pores.

What I love about Sugarbomb is that the shade, application and pigmentation make it just so easy. The colour is soft and subtle (except for the obvious shimmer), which I prefer for everyday wear as I’m always cautious not to overdo my blush. It’s not super noticeable you're wearing anything, but it does give your face that extra warmth and colour in a natural, easygoing way. You can brush it on quite haphazardly and not have to worry about putting on too much, or perfect placement, or needing to tone it down after. It just works the first time. For a relatively light shade, I find the wear time to be pretty impressive, which isn't something I’ve felt with Benefit boxed powders in general.

  1. Sugarbomb looks a bit too peachy for me.. I'm thinking of Hervana if I can afford it at some point! But my mom's been hunting for another nude-y blush since she hit pan on Orgasm and is looking for something more "natural", so I'll tell her to check this out! Thanks for the great review :D

  2. sugar bomb is so pretty, its a nice sherbet orange color that seems to suit slightly more "yellower" tones, in my opinion!
how small is the sample sized blush right, the brush cant even swirl around in it haha
the blush looks so pretty and natural on you :D

  14. I only have a Coralista mini, but I'm looking forward to getting some of their others as well. I've been eyeing Dandelion and Dallas especially, but I think I'll have to add Sugarbomb to that list as well! It looks very pretty on your cheeks :)

  25. A good blush makes ALL the difference. This is a very pretty shade on you. This story kind of reminds me of when I was in high school and bought some lipstick (Clinique) and the saleslady threw in a different shade (that I never in a million years would have chosen for myself) as a sample. Well, after trying the new shade, it quickly became my favorite and now, after all these years, it's one of my staple colors! Funny how things work. :)

  26. What a GORGEOUS colour! I think I need to get this now, or one of the other similar ones you've swatched!

  27. How does the ALDI Sunset blush compare to Deep Throat and Sugarbomb? I remember it to be peachier than Orgasm, but is it comparable to Sugarbomb? Your 'perfect blush' spiel sounds so logical! I've heard mixed reviews about the Benefit boxed powders- I'm not too keen to try them out just yet. :/

    1. I just swatched the 3 of them side by side! Sunset is the darkest one, much more of a reddish orange colour. Deep Throat is lighter, more pink. Sugarbomb is the lightest, more pink like Deep Throat, but also with a touch brown and more pronounced gold sheen.

I generally find myself pleasantly surprised by Benefit's stuff. Their retro/elaborate packaging isn't really my style but I do appreciate the attention to detail in their packaging, and their products generally perform well. However there are so many affordable blush options that are excellent quality, like Rimmel and Essence, that I'm sure you don't need to shell out for Benefit :)

  28. I agree with you about how it does look more of a highlighting shade than a blush because it is so light! The colour looks beautifully refreshing though and gives a pretty subtle pop of colour to your cheeks. It looks like it is a shade between Asian Sensation and Coralista haha!

  30. I have been dying to get my hands on Sugarbomb since getting a sample of it last year - behind Hervana, it's definitely got to be my favourite shade from Benefit, and it actually looks really good on pale skin, which not all of their colours do (i.e. Hoola). It really suits your skin tone, too! xx

  31. Gorgoues I say, reminds me so much of a blush I love from Bourjois Cuirve brun I believe thats how you spell it! It's a light peach brown, so light I usually go with my brush digging for more product to get a more noticeable peach flush. I like how gentle that shade is...it would go so well with darker eye make up!
