Plumping Pink

What's this ... more pink lipstick? After I declared I need to put myself on a ban? To be fair: a) It was purchased before I had imposed the ban b) The ban is more a guide in the right direction and a reminder of my excesses than something to be strictly enforced (i.e. let's face it, it wasn't ever going to happen). I'd asked my friend to buy a couple of MAC lipsticks for me while she was in Hawaii recently, since they're $16 USD ($21) rather than $36 in the land of hideously overpriced makeup known as Australia. She ended up very kindly giving the two lipsticks to me for my birthday. Today I'll review Peach Blossom, but I'll have a post on the other one shortly (any guesses what I picked? Hint: it's a classic!).

As a lipstick junkie, the idea of building a MAC lipstick collection is infinitely appealing. The huge shade range and the popularity and individuality of the colours is a makeup lover's dream. I find the quality of MAC lipsticks to be generally impeccable, so I can justify the cost even if they're more than what I'd normally spend on a single lipstick. I now have 8 MAC lipsticks (Shy Girl, Creme Cup, Viva Glam Nicki, Chatterbox, Plumful, Patisserie, Peach Blossom ... and one to be revealed). It's a good number, in that each and every single purchase was thoroughly researched and considered. I'm currently eyeing Sweet and Sour and Velvet Teddy (and possibly Crosswires), but I know there's no limit to how many lipsticks I could let myself buy from MAC. I have to be content with what I have and draw the line somewhere.

A few things pushed me over the edge to seek out Peach Blossom. First was Amelia Liana's Top 5 MAC Lipsticks video, where she mentions it alongside Rebel, Shy Girl, Diva and Morange. The second was Vivianna Does Makeup describing Peach Blossom as possibly her favourite MAC lipstick so far. Add to that a whopping 4.7/5 rating on MakeupAlley and I was beyond sold.

MAC Peach Blossom (Cremesheen)

l-r: MAC Peach Blossom, MAC Creme Cup, MAC Patisserie, Revlon Petal, Revlon Blush

l-r: MAC Peach Blossom, MAC Creme Cup, MAC Patisserie, Revlon Petal, Revlon Blush

Peach Blossom is a sheer light pink with nude/peach tones. MAC Creme Cup is a cooler baby pink. MAC Patisserie is more nudey-caramel and sheerer. Revlon ColorBurst Lipstick in Petal is a darker candy pink with more pearl. Revlon ColorBurst Lipstick in Blush is also darker and frostier, and more reddish brown.

Excuse the state of my bottom lip. It wasn't a good lip day. Peach Blossom is a Cremesheen finish which isn't my favourite (I MUCH prefer Lustre). Contrary to popular opinion, I don't find Cremesheen lipsticks to be particularly hydrating or even forgiving on flaky, chapped lips. If anything, the formula feels a bit thick and sticky, rather than moisturising and lightweight. Problematically, it also settles into lip lines.

Apart from the less than stellar formula, one aspect of Peach Blossom I never anticipated is the frost content. You can't really tell in the swatches, but it has this silver shimmer running through it. I guess it's meant to give a more glossy look to the lips and it's just subtle enough that I can tolerate it, but still, frost in my lipstick in any form is a huge no-no.

Peach Blossom leans slightly warm, though its sheerness can make it appear a touch cool-toned on the lips. It's a very safe, pretty, "wearable" colour. A good example of a lipstick for those with a light to medium skin tone who don't like or wear lipstick often. It's very unassuming, understated, and at times, hardly looks like you have anything on. Patisserie is still my #1, but Peach Blossom is its girlier, pinkier cousin.

    1. Lustre is the best! Thank you - hope they're useful.

  2. Oh this shade looks perfect for spring time :) I like that it's a different kind of pink, has a touch of peach in it so different enough to buy :))

    1. It is a very springtime colour! There's definitely a bit of peach coming through that gives it warmth.

  3. Despite of my never been good relationship with MAC Lipsticks, I have to admit that this color made me think for a second to give MAC another chance, but the silver frost you mentioned ( though I can't see it anywhere on the swatch or on the lips ) kind of put me off because frost on the lips is also a huge no no for me.. But, I might swatch this one at MAC counter when I pass by because it looks very pretty!

    1. The frost is subtle and doesn't show up in photos but I can see it mainly under dim fluorescent light. It's less noticeable in indirect natural light.

  4. This is gorgeous on you! I can definitely not detect the frost in your swatches but it appears very glossy so thats probably thanks to the shimmer? I am so curious to know what the other one is!

    1. The frost wasn't captured in these photos but I swear it exists lol. Depends on the lighting conditions. The other one is a classic MAC colour and not something I'd normally gravitate to!

  5. Hmm...I have been tempted by Peach Blossom, it looks gorgeous! Though, from your review, I think I'd still be more inclined to pick up Patisserie. They both seem like shades I'd get a tonne of use out of though!

    1. They are both very understated, MLBB kind of shades that go with pretty much everything!

  6. This looks so pretty and I only own one in Please Me and I do love that pink shade. I'm not really and peach lover but this looks extremely lovely.

  7. yikes, not sure where my comment just went, but I was just thinking that peach is going to be go-to for SS'15. Also, can't detect even a little frostiness in your swatches!

    1. Aw, hate when a comment just disappears! I'm a sucker for corals, peach and pinks. The frost is subtle but definitely there especially under artificial light.

  8. I had a feeling from the thumbnail it was Peach Blossom! I have this too and I love it! It's my MLBB lipstick so I agree with what you're saying about it being understated. Seems to look very pretty on your skintone though!

  9. I wish Peachblossom was a lustre, the colour is spot on for me but the finish is so *meh*.

  10. I really can't stand frost in a lipstick, so annoying and often unflattering on most people. I adore Patisserie, so gorgeous. I think Crosswires would look so good on you, and I have hopes of getting Velvet Teddy or some of the famous Jenner lipliners from MAC eventually. I need to back2mac soon!

    1. I hate frost too, it's so unappealing! Imagine if it came back into fashion haha. You never know - one of the Jenner/Kardashians might start a trend :p Crosswires is too pretty!

I've been wanting to get patisserie since you wrote your review...and now I'm craving this one too!
It looks too pretty *-* and perfect for everyday wear!

    1. Both this and Patisserie are understated/MLBB shades that would go with anything. I prefer Patisserie but if you like pink shades more then go for Peach Blossom.

  12. Peach Blossom looks gorgeous, and I love how it looks on your lips definitely perfect for everyday wear :) I do find sometimes the lighter shades can feel a bit thick settling into lines :( Fab review :)

    1. I think I just don't get along with the Cremesheen formula. It's not that comfortable on the lips I find. The colour is nice though :) Thanks for reading and commenting!

  13. I've been wanting this shade for a while now, it's so pretty! I do love the Luster finish too, I find the Cremesheens can be a bit too much depending on how much you apply, I think less is better. Excited to see what your other lipstick is!

    1. Yes, less product on the lips probably helps to minimise the lipstick settling into lip lines. I wish Peach Blossom was a Lustre rather than Cremesheen!

  15. It's so pretty! I can see why Patisserie would beat it as a favourite but the extra hint of pink in Peach Blossom (and the adorable name) would be a huge hit. I'm guessing your new and extremely anticipated lipstick is Angel or Rebel. Russian Red, Ruby Woo and Morange are classics too but you usually drift towards shades other than postbox-red.

  16. Love the colour so much! I have yet to expand my MAC lipstick collection, in fact I can't really even call it a collection since I only have two. But your posts and swatches are making those MAC lipsticks call out at my name. I'm guessing your next post will be one of the ones that Cherie has mentioned since those are like all time classics :P

  18. Hahaha, don't worry too much about your ban! You don't seem to have giant spending crazes so I think you'll be fine without a super strict ban! I totally NEED to buy patisserie! Or some other similar light brown nude shade, as those are my favorite type of nude colors. My natural lip color is so pink and rosy that pink brown nudes turn deep rose on my lips! I own no mac lipsticks so I totally need to go to the counter and swatch a ton and pick one to start with!

  22. That is such a beautiful shade! I love peachy pinks like this, they're so wearable xx

  23. It swatches beautifully, it's more similar to Patisserie than I thought.
I am on a MLBB lipstick ban because I have too many of those but I won't (can't) completely put an lipstick ban on myself hehe.
I never swatched velvet teddy in person until the other day in my work break and I was SO close to picking it up but I didn't want to be impulsive....that being said I think i will be going back for it LOL.

  26. Oh wow, such a beautiful shade! I haven't heard much about this one, but this post definitely got me curious! Will research more, lol. One that it's been on my list forever is Shanghai Spice; it's much peachier and less pink, which makes it special on my books because it's more uncommon.
